Car hire for 20 year old?
Discussion
Hi guys/guyettes
just wondering whether anyone knows of any car hire companies that would be willing to hire to someone under 21? It would be split driving between myself and a friend (He's 21) going down to download festival this year.
We're looking to hire a car and split costs rather than me taking the 200SX and spending far too much on fuel and him keeping up in his rather nippy (Read thirsty) Glanza.
Struggling to find anywhere that'll lease to me, it would need to be both of us driving so can't just do him. Need a practical car for taking 4 of us down + back in relative comfort + good storage space.
TIA,
Rod

No suggestions on who, but TBH you'd probably be as well taking your car. If you do get someone to cover you it'll end up costing extra, and I don't really see the point in hiring it just to park it in a field for 4 days. You'll be over £100 quid to hire, and you'll still need to fuel it up on top of that. Just my opinion!
Edit: never read the 4 folk bit, but get the shoehorn out and use the Nissan or mg. Bring spare coolant.

Haven't mentioned download aha, wiser than that.
Re: temp insurance, it's getting two of us that'd be difficult. Will see what I can do with the MG but don't trust it!
One on the way down, phone and change to the other on the way back?Re: temp insurance, it's getting two of us that'd be difficult. Will see what I can do with the MG but don't trust it!
Or see if you can insure "a 20 year old male with 3 years' experience and no claims or convictions"...

Surely the cost to hire plus fuel isnt going to give any savings on taking your own car?just wondering whether anyone knows of any car hire companies that would be willing to hire to someone under 21? Depends where you work I have had hire cars aged 20 at my place but only due to the fact I am on the company policy...
I think Hertz used to do a young driver scheme for under 21yr olds but they was a surcharge of approx £35 a day for insurance and that coupled with the cost of a s
tty corsa for the day (say £30) will easily be more than the extra 15mpg or so extra it will achieve!

And my friends Glanza will probably blow up, It's not a car for cruising along at 70 for hours on end either, stiff, uncomfy, bucket seats etc.
Even a base engined ford galaxy type thing would be decent.

Do you have a friend with a basic car you could borrow and then get temp cover on for a few days?

That may be a better option as you can just give them a bit of beer money or offer them use of your car...

It's down to three of us so not as bad. if it's a smaller car. These have cars and I believe they rent to 19 yr olds with a surcharge you would have to become a member though
http://www.citycarclub.co.uk/about/what-does-it-co...
Edit - In the small print...
"Drivers aged under 22 are required to pay a £500 Young driver security deposit which will be held by City Car Club. It is the responsibility of the member to request the return of the deposit should the member reach the age of 22 or ceases to be a member of City Car Club (Less any outstanding payments). Insurance excess reduction is not available to members under the age of 22 years of age. "
You can join at 19 years old though
