Police Scotlands first national crackdown
Discussion
Guess what the new Police Scotland are targeting with their first national crackdown.
Is it Burglars? Drugs? Knife crime? Nope. It's speeding.

I suppose the coffers will be empty after paying for all that newly branded stationary and buildings.

'Transport minister Keith Brown said: "In Scotland we currently have the lowest road casualty figures since records began.
"However we are not complacent and our determination to build on this progress is matched by Police Scotland who also believe that even one death on our roads is one too many.'
I don't think they can actually believe what they are saying: so they have road casualty figures to the lowest ever recorded but they want it to zero. Is that even a realistic goal??
This also belies the fact that a government report highlighted that only 6% of road deaths (IIRC) in the UK were caused directly by speed, with the majority being cause under the umbrella of 'driving with undue care and attention'.
Surely, then, the only way to get deaths to zero is to get rid of drivers? Which in itself is a ludicrous idea.
Do they really think that we are that stupid as to believe that the 'crackdown' is anything beyond a money spinning operation?
How about they focus on crimes that affect more people, crimes that have statistics that are not the 'lowest...figures since records began'?

The emphasis in the article seems to be on every type of crap driving and that's a good thing.
The problem here is what constitutes crap driving.Much of what a competent, fast driver does is deemed crap in the eyes of plod, indoctrinated by a training system that's over the top with risk aversion. You only have to read the words of some plod in SP&L threads here to understand that.
What was deemed sound advice in the 1960s and 70s has been turned on its head by trendy trainers and policy makers who think they know better, but don't.

it's actually: only 6% of all major accidents is speeding even a factor. not even the main cause, just a factor. less than 4% of accidents are due to speeding"However we are not complacent and our determination to build on this progress is matched by Police Scotland who also believe that even one death on our roads is one too many.'

the real kick in the teeth is that 88% of accidents involving cars and pedestrians are the fault of the pedestrian (again usually due to lack of attention). But despite this the driver is legally and financially automatically at fault
Speeding cameras actually increase accidents rates by up to 30% when they are put in as people are more worried about their speed and not paying full attention to the road, leading to accidents.
Speed cameras are there to generate money and show that councils and politicians are behind the "speeding kills" slogan
So theoretically, the "speeding kills" slogan causes more death than it prevents :P

Actually the FIRST campaign undertaken by the Police Service of Scotland took place last Friday and was a campaign to reduce violence that resulted in some people being arrested. Maybe you missed it in the press?? Is it Burglars? Drugs? Knife crime? Nope. It's speeding.
