Hi. I need to get to Aberdeen tonight. I usually get the train, but I have overheard a few guys at work complimenting the Megabus service. Has anyone used this recently?? Apparently the Gold service use Leather Trimmed state of the art coaches with free Wifi, Tea/Coffee and sandwiches. It's only taking 2 hrs 39 minutes according to the website, and a bargain at £20 by the sounds of things!

The Megabus is a decent enough service, quick and fairly comfy. Especially if you get one of the brand new 62' plate coaches.

Biased point of view. tongue out

Lol, cheers. Would you say it's any better or worse than the train?? Someone said you can't have alcohol on them either. I normally sit on the train, stick a movie on the Ipad and have a few beers.

Train is comfier but quite a bit more expensive.
So if you're just looking to get cheap A to B travel then Megabus is brilliant.

And yup, alcohol banned on all buses.

Open return rail ticket is £54, return on the megabus would be £40, so I might be better paying the extra £14 for a more comfortable journey! I was just curious about giving it a go!

I don't mind the mega-bus at all, unfortunately every time I've been on it attracts many of the great unwashed. And if you end with some wee-wee smelling, windy bugger sat next to you, it will feel like a very very long 2 and a half hours.

I can however be very unlucky. If it helps they have never been late when I've used them.

Done it twice in last few months but from aberdeen to Glasgow.

Used the gold service on both occasions and frankly I can't fault it, relaxing, comfortable and cheap.

Wife used it yesterday to go to Hamilton and found it great. She is using her sticks at the moment (MS playing up) and found the staff very helpful. Only pain is that stupid bus station in Aberdeen where theres no access to drop off disabled people. What a stupid design that was obviously thought through during a Friday tea-break. She returns today so will give you her thoughts tomorrow on return journey. Chongwong you can get a smelly horid person sitting next to you on a crowded train as well.

It's excellent as buses go; not nice if you end up next to a soapdodger, but you get those on the train too. If I was doing that journey on my own money I'd be on the bus; I use the train solely because work pay for it.

I feel like a pathetic pedant posting this, but it's Citylink gold rather than Megabus - don't think the Gold journeys turn up on the Megabus website. http://www.citylinkgold.co.uk/

Do report back on this one - I quite fancy a day out to Aberdeen or Inverness with someone else driving smile

Service must have improved in recent years. Used to get it years ago as a poor student, and they had what was then mostly old council buses or something. the inside would steam up till you couldnt see out the window (not that you could anyway due to the massive '£1' on the side), then someone would open a window and you'd freeze. Always attributed my festive cold being contracted during the journey. Broke down in Dundee at least twice or made to wait for an hour due to a bus changeover.. Being relatively old, and packed to the gunnels, they also gave an odd boat-like ride quality. Not the best if hungover..

Anyway, the good old days.. :-D

Be prepared for minimal legroom. You'll need to bring plenty to eat/read and be prepared not to use the toilet for the journey, but I guess it's bearable. I did it once or twice some years back when I was a poor and penniless student.

Its certainly cheap. Whether it'd good value depends on how much weight you give to comfort.

We went Glasgow to Manchester and back years ago. Absolutely MWI in each direction.

This was when they didn't even have toilets on them and were the old service buses rather than coaches.

Much better now though i would hope. Had to stop every hour to go for a pee stop.

If you are talking about Citylink Gold then I have heard it beats the train hands down. But if it's the Megabus you're talking about then avoid at all costs.
