Oily people...Help!
Discussion
I know loads of you guys work in the oil industry so I'm looking for a bit of advice from y'all.
I've just handed in my application for severance to my employer for the past 11 years. Currently work in student welfare/careers. If it goes through ok, I'll be leaving at the end of July and will have a years wage, tax free. (which isn't very much money).
I have a B.Eng in Engineering management. Graduated in 2008 and majored mostly in Quality, Project Management, Rapid Prototyping and Product Testing. As yet, it has remained as a somewhat useless, but fancy piece of paper.
Having spoken to a few people in the industry; I quite fancy going down that career path. As a careers advisor, I generally only deal with people who are coming into education for the first time; so in my own case, with experience in other things and lots of transferable skills coupled with a qualification, I'm not really sure what to do.
Can any of you rig workers, oilfield and technical support people tell me more about the kind of jobs that are out there and how I'd go about getting in to the industry? Any/All advice is greatly appreciated!

I'd try either an operator or engineering contractor and ask about their graduate schemes. Tell them your qualification and ask if there's someone you can talk to. It would be unusual to go straight in as an engineering manager as both you and the project would be very exposed. It would be more normal to get passed around a few project services functions for a short period to gain an understanding and do a gig or two as assistant project manager. From there, you can get what the engineers would consider 'a proper job' as a project engineer. Once you've got perhaps 7-8 years behind you you should have enough knowledge and credibility to either take a position as project manager, engineering manager or perhaps project controls manager - all depending on your personal strengths, weaknesses, inclinations and of course, the right opportunity and a boss who's willing to stake his reputation on you. It can work though, if you're driven.
You might have to wait a good few months before the graduate schemes open up again. Aberdeen university careers service job board is brilliant. Quite a few oil companies post there and it is where I saw the advert for my job.
The likes of EnQuest posted a few project specific jobs like assistant team members for Thistle LLX and whatever their FPSO in Hamgburg is called again.

I'd suggest a trainee Proj Man or similar with ANY type of Oil Related company - Operator/Engineering/Subsea, whatever.
Other than that, get yourself round the Agencies in Aberdeen... Hazel, Brander, Bryant, Orion...
edit; there is a skills gap looming in the Indusrty, so could be a good time to get in.
