Welsh Visitor - Edinburgh to South Wales with new M3
Discussion
Hi all
Having ordered myself a new M3 from Eastern BMW Edinburgh, we will be fly up for collection in March and then must head back to South Wales that same day
. Unfortunately, we won't have much time to stay in Scotland (work as ever rules) so its collect and head back with only one stop enroute home.
Please, your help
...... I do not want to jump straight onto the M8, M74 and then M6 in favor of a route more worthy of the motor. Granted, being fresh from the wrappers, I won't be thrashing the car but your recommendations would be appreciated for 'drivers' roads heading out of Edinburgh back towards the M6 cira Carlisle? (or anywhere you suggest would benefit detour)
I'm open to all suggestions and thanks in advance
Cheers all

Another vote for the A701, take the Edinburgh bypass East, come off heading for Penicuik, before reaching Penicuik there is a large roundabout (called Gowkley Moss), just after that take the turn off for Auchendinny. Go through Auchendinny and stay on that road until you get to Leadburn, at the crossroads go straight over and that's you on the A701 proper.
Just before you reach Moffat, you will be at the top of a hill with a deep valley on your left, that is known as The Devil's Beef Tub from the old days of Border raiding, the Border Reivers would hide there stolen cattle in that valley.

Depending on time and how many miles that you want to do, you could, take the A68 towards Hexham (watch out for the cameras), take a right along the A69 to Carlisle and then join the A6 southwards, instead of the M6 going over Shap to Kendal, then join the A591, then A590 and link to the M6.
There are loads of excellent other routes that you can take too.
I vary between the A702 or the A7 or the A68 whenever I visit Perth

^^ One of Eastern Boy's 0% PCP specials that I keep reading about in the ///M-Power section?
Both options (PCP or PCH), whichever is chosen, will be right for each lucky individual

From the bypass take the A7 south as far as Selkirk. Once you arrive in Selkirk you want the A708 (St Marys Loch road, in the direction of Moffat). The EVO boys did their ECOTY test here recently. Its a genial road.
I'd only follow this route though in good weather - it can be a bit of a mare if its snowing or pouring down.
A701 is fine, but A708 is exceptional.
You have the option of going even more cross country and heading for Newcastleton from it also.
Other option would be A68 to Newton St Boswells and then the A699 across to Selkirk - then over the A708. Tonnes of routes through the borders and once off the a7/a68/a710 etc lightly trafficked and highly entertaining.
Many routes more than worthy of an M3 - enjoy it
