Forgot to ask a few weeks ago smile

I was behind what I thought was a boggo family saloon, going out of Dundee, up the big hill with all the roundabouts etc, northbound, in my Clio.

Expected to have no trouble blasting past a porky car with 120 or so bhp, once we'd cleared the last roundabout. It was badged TS, but it was almost pulling away from me up to the speed limit! Must be 200bhp+ methinks, but looked totally cooking spec.

Anybody on here baiting 'Hot' Hatches with their Mazda 6!?

Well, potentially yes.

I'm sure it had only one skinny exhaust though, and I'd expect it would need a fair amount more power than my 180 horses to begin to pull away up a hill!

For the sake of my manhood, I'm going to have to assume it was a totally disguised MPS hehe

Ah.. but it's not the power that shoves you up a hill, it's the torque!

TS is just the trim level. It was most likely one of the diesels - tons of torque, the bhp figure is almost irrelevant, probably only had around 140bhp.

180PS technically smile The 2.2D comes with a few tunes, 180ps is the highest. His is a sport, not sure if the TS was available with 180ps or not. I think the next one down was around 163ps. Then 2.0 at 140 something.

I have an unmapped Mazda 6 sport and its surprises quite a few people how quick in a straight line they are.

Had a similar thing on that up hill bit of road leaving Dundee. I was in a ~340bhp MR2 at the time (although taking it relatively easy at the time due to an intermittent misfire), and headed up the hill with a reasonable squirt, only to find a newish shape Civic stuck to me.. I pushed a little harder, and again the Civic was still there... Backed off at about warp factor 9.0, and because the misfire was back..

Anyway, I'm pretty sure it was the diesel version of that car, and no doubt had ~300lb/ft torque...

Those diesel trolls must just wait for a lower torque petrol motor to come along and reel them in at the big uphill stretch hehe

But that MR2 (turbo) had +300lb/ft torque to play with, and would no doubt have left it if I really put the foot down, but I was restricted to around 4.5k rpms (effectively a diesel hehe) and couldn't properly open the taps so to speak.. However I was not accelerating slowly though!

I kept up with and overtook an EP3 Type R on that very stretch.

In my Vectra CDTi, the driver looked like he wanted to cry laugh
