Just wondering if anyone has successfully claimed off of Glasgow City Council? Driving home last night hit a crater, 2.5ft by 3.5ft and 100cm deep on Shields Road as you go over the railway bridge as its narrows by the permanent bollards towards the Murray Group Dodge/Hyundai garage. It has taken a chunk approx 20cm wide out of my tyre and I am 99% sure my 19in rage alloy wheel off of my Honda Civic Type R is ruined although will be checking to see if it can get repaired at the weekend. The alloy alone costs £405. I have reported this on fixmystreet.co.uk, potholes.co.uk and emailed GCC last night (LESRalf@glasgow.gov.uk). When I was there two other cars had wheels damaged. Whilst taking photos, the Council turned up, the employee said to his mate, we will need to stop traffic, jumped back in the van and drop away. I was there for the next 30 mins or so and they never returned. I also phoned the Police so that they could stop other cars been damaged. I will be following all the steps on potholes.co.uk but wanted to see if anyone had been successful

I reported most of the Glennifer Braes road out the back of Paisley last year (on potholes.com, fix my street etc.), they still haven't been fixed and I'm 99% sure it's one of those potholes that buckled one of my 15's. Will be watching this thread with interest.

Slight fail on my part, 10cm deep!!!!!!

Photo was taken last night but hopefully gives an idea. Of course by this morning on my lift to work (car is out of action) they have of course not only filled it in but put in a large new square section which is much larger than the hole was before, a day late for me unfortunately.

I am going to follow the guide on potholes.co.uk and I have the claim form from GCC. It states, 'i wish to advise you that claims of the nature you have described are considered by the Council on a full legal liability basis, which requires claimants to establish that the Council was at fault or was negligent in causing the loss or damage sustained. The presence of a defect on the road does not automatically confer liability on the Council.'. This ain't going to be easy, will report back on the outcome.

It's looking like £330 for an alloy, £120 for a Falken 452 from Camskill, then fitting and possibly tracking. This assumes that the suspension and steering is all fine which I have still to check. Ahhhh, f&&king potholes, good to know my £280 road tax has been useful!!!!

Any tips on what I should do and say in communication with them? Did you just follow the process on potholes.co.uk?

I succesfully claimed against Glasgow city council but it took 14months to get my £300.
I got a claim form from them then went back to the site of the hole and took a few pictures and measurements which i also sent in with the claim form. They tend to try and forget about you, keep calling them!
Also sent in reciepts for new tyre and fitting.

Lots of photos, wheels + hole. Photos of area if possible detailing how hard It was to avoid and/or see. Especially note bad weather and time of day (i.e. dark most likely)
If your wheels are in good nick tell them there is no betterment. Explain you just want to cover costs incurred. Provide receipts for work and keep copies. It may take a few months, but you should be fine.
Just keep to the facts.

Cheers, have photos of the damage, pothole in question, details of a guy who also had has wheel damaged ten minutes earlier, a police incident number, can go back and get photos of its location but its where the bollards narrow the road over the railway bridge and it was really dark and pissing it down on Tuesday so nowhere else to go really. Fingers crossed.

I note you said it has been filled now but I hit my tyre against a pothole in the very same area and it was a crater from the sound of it and busted my tyre in the process.

I'm just wondering how you managed to take the photos you took as the barriers separate the pavement from the road by quite some distance.

I've reported it to the police and will report it on the potholes website. Very disappointed that the council has let the roads run down to this level that they are actually dangerous.

True, they are totally wrecked with all the rain and lack of upkeep. Apparently Glasgow has the worst roads in the UK. Really annoying for those of us who love their cars so much!

Tell me about it - I have worked in road surfacing for over 30 years and have just been made redundant for the second time in 3 years as the budgets for roads keeps getting cut - all sorts of skilled men being thrown on the scrapheap, yet we're driving around dodging potholes all over the country!
It's only gonna get worse...

That truly is disgusting, I'm definitely going to take this as far as I can.

Yeah it had been, however I did notice before I stopped work for Xmas that there was another hole appearing close by. Been away over the holidays so haven't been back that way, as its my route home from work. As for taking a photo, it was at night about 9pm so wee bit quieter than normal but basically had to risk life and limb and stand on the road, to the point of stopping traffic, but didn't care to be honest, I needed the photo for my claim and I knew that by the morning the hole would be filled in as it was. It's a really bad bit, by narrowing the road, I assume because the bridge has lost it's strength and can no longer support two lanes of traffic on both sides, it means there is no way to go if there is a pothole.

GCC have sent me a letter stating that they have received my letter so hopefully find out soon there answer which from the pothole website should be a no, I then have to do freedom of info etc. One bit of good news was that my alloy was fine so just a new tyre! Roads are shocking and getting worse.

Well, I'm having my solicitor (luckily a family member) send them a letter and hopefully it will set the wheels in motion a bit quicker but it's good that your alloy was not damaged, neither was mine thankfully. But even the tyre is £130 and it was a new tyre on my car already.

Not sure if this pothole can appear in a month though-It's big pretty big.

I read on another website you need to state that the council have an obligation to maintain the "queens highway" and in Scotland ignorance is not a defence. Especially not on such a busy road which should be inspected regularly.

Please let me know how you get on with them and I will do likewise.

I managed to get a picture by leaning over the barrier...wasn't ready to risk my life just yet!

I used to live nearby and used that bit of road for my commute, it's always had a pothole there and just now it's at it's worst, I know I've reported it in the past so should be an easy claim!

I'm fortunate enough to live in that area and the roads in and around Tradeston have always been a disgrace and they're only getting worse.

Quite tempted to just got on a mission the next weekend I'm free and report every single pothole so hopefully they get slammed with claims for not fixing them within the timescales expected and people subsequently damaging their cars.
