I need a Luton van for 4 days and I'm trying to find a company that won't charge the absolute earth.

Requirements are

Reasonable price for young driver (21 with a clean licence)
Zero excess insurance available
National breakdown cover (I'm moving to Cheltenham, so dodgy little companies that do their own recovery aren't much use)

Any ideas? scratchchin

Europcar and the like charge a fortune for the extras never mind the actual rental.

If you:
  • Have a valid student card
  • Have a valid credit card in your name, and
  • Have had a full licence for more than 1 year
Then search for Hertz Students in Google (it's not well advertised on their website), they will discount the price of the hire, but do add a daily Young Driver's Surcharge of around £15/day on top of the hire cost.

Edit to add - I have not used it so there may be restrictions on the size of the vans you can hire.

Hertz Students have raised the lower age limit to 23 and the biggest van they'll do on that scheme is a SWB Transit frown

I have hired a small van from them before and can recommend them to anyone that meets their criteria though, they "forgot" to charge me the surcharge thumbup

Thats a shame. I was hoping to use them later in the year but I guess that's a no-go now... Not sure if many local hire companies will entertain hiring to a 21 year old, unfortunately.

Europcar via Holiday Autos is reasonable for cars (again, they forgot to charge me the surcharge when I picked up the car) but their surcharge for vans is too high at £30/day. Total price for a Luton for 4 days is just shy of £400 with the excess cover and young driver surcharge yikes

I had an LDV Maxus off them last week, everything was fine but I wasn't convinced there would be much support if it broke down hundreds of miles away hehe

Price seems good, £195 for 4 days in a LWB van is a lot cheaper than some.

Beat me too it. Have always been impressed with their service. Much more personal than hertz e.tc. Also no connection with them.

Do you know what they charge for an excess waiver and or additional drivers?

Sorry couldn't tell you off the top of my head! Might be worth giving them a phone.

Boulevard won't cover under 23's frown

I think a LWB high roof van will do the job rather than a luton having thought about it. Cheapest quote so far is £255 for 4 days from Aspire with the excess reduced to £100 and an additional driver.

Not too shabby. I'm guessing your getting somebody else to drive it back to Dunfermline for you?

They do as long as you have fully comp insurance cover note from your own car. See their FAQ section.

Nah, I'll need to bring it back then take Toastomatic down, the additional driver is just to share the driving on the two long journeys.

Right - this is getting closer. Decided I need it for 5 days now too....

Also think I've got too much stuff for just a LWB van since I've been collecting more furniture and stuff.

Fairdrive wouldn't give me a quote because I'm going too far
ACL Hire have quoted me £405 for a Luton (£350 if I buy the excess insurance from elsewhere, £280 if my additional driver chickens out / I decide I can do the whole journey myself)
Aspire would be £330 for a LWB Master
Northgate are £485 for a Luton

Do you know anybody with a large van of their own? Might be cheaper to be put on their insurance policy for a week than "hire" a van?
