Wondered if anyone was able to suggest where is best to rent a city centre flat in Glasgow.

Looking on Right Move now and don't really know where to start.

Any advice welcomed.

Cheers

Looking for 1/2 bedrooms, parking is essential and close to decent drinking establishments is a bonus. Budget, well for a 1 bed nothing above £650.

Seen some flats on Right Move on Oswald Street - any thoughts guys?

Really do not know Glasgow and will be relocating, thanks!

For £650pm for a 1 bed you should get amongst the best available.

A colleague used to live there, was put off by the junkies using the bin stores as a shooting gallery - might be better now though! Traditionally that's not a nice area of the City Centre anyway, I personally wouldn't live down there and I've lived in Glasgow all of my life.

I'd be trying to get somewhere in the Park District/Woodlands - like this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/proper... ETA it's on street permit parking which is cheap and not too bad getting a space up that neck of the woods.

I don't stay in Glasgow city centre but my problem with Oswald Street would be its proximity to Central Station. The 4 streets around central station are probably the dodgiest/grubbiest in the city centre.

I'd be looking at the merchant city area.

What might be helpful to know is that the city centre's like the wild west on Fri and Sat nights and probably the worst place in Glasgow to stay.

Ah, so those flats on Oswald Street are a no no then. They had parking with some of the flats but don't like the thought of the underground parking being dodgy to be honest.

Being right by Central Station aint good either.

Merchant City?

I lived in The Herald Building for 18 months on Albion Street in Merchant city. Our 1 bed apartment wasn't the biggest but it was modern as is the whole building. It's a large building so there's generally always flats to let. There is secure underground parking with lifts up to your floor although not every flat has a space.

I personally wouldn't live anywhere else in town other than Merchant city if I were to move back.

At the moment we're currently a little outside the center, about a 10 minute walk to Merchant City. Here we have a two bed flat which is about twice the size over all for less money and lots of free parking so it's certainly worth considering.

If you want any more info drop me a pm.

If you look at a map of Glasgow it's roughly the area between George Square and High Street.

You have a good budget. Depending on where you are working/don't mind a walk you should be able to get into Park area off woodlands road. Nice area.

Poprock just went through this? Not sure where he rented? Perhaps worth emailing him? He has lived in Glasgow for a while now, so knows the good, the bad and the ugly places.

Beware of properties advertised as being Merchant City that aren't really!

I'd say the areas between the boundaries of Albion St/Albion Gate (gated courtyard development), Ingram St, Watson St/Bell St and George Square are best - you'll see flats as far East as Greendyke St/Moir St and as far South as Clyde St/The River advertised as Merchant City but those locales might be a bit rough for a non-Glaswegian, being nearer Calton/The Barras.

If you don't want to go as far West as Woodlands/Park District (which I'd at least urge you to consider as it's quiet and upmarket on the whole), have a look at Garnethill area, just North of Sauchiehall St - parking is tighter up there but it's quite a quiet little pocket yet still very Central.

Big problem we had when staying in city centre, Garnethill, was great flat but problem was neighbours with no interest whatsoever on what went on outside front door

If it were me buying again a good look round the immediate place would be most interesting

Avoid anywhere in close proximity to Central Station.

There's a homeless mission on Crimea Street and that end of town attracts a lot of junkies and jakes

Especially avoid any places on James Watt Street and York Street, unless of course you like prostitutes on your door step.

Its also important to know when any building you look at was converted to residential status. You won't be able to get a parking permit if the building was converted (or built) after Jan 2000. See here for more info

Hope this helps

Having lived in City centre for 5 years before I oved out to Bishopbriggs I cannot see attaction nowadays in staying there

Its getting like Dodge city at times

There are loads of cheaper better lets a short 15min Bus/Taxi/Train ride away
