Hi all, I'm visiting Edinburgh / Falkirk area over the next few days and have hired a car for new years day.

Can anyone recommend some nice places to visit with scenic views / nice drives etc anywhere within a hour or so drive from Edinburgh?

Cheers,
Mark

Others more local will probably advise better, but if you head down the A701 all the way to Moffat its a good run.....

There are so many brilliant roads and loops that you can take.

The scenary is amazing.

Just watch out for speed cameras if you take the A9 or the A68 etc.

If you have not done it before, take a drive round Arthurs Seat in Edinburgh.
Agree about the A701, just before you come to Moffat you go over the Devils Beef Tub, where in the days of the Border Rievers, stolen cattle were hidden in the valley below. If you are coming back the same way, turn off at Blyth Bridge onto the A72 heading towards Peebles, then just as you come to Lyne Station on the right, take the opening on the left over to Eddleston and head back to Edinburgh turning right at Leadburn to avoid Penicuik and instead go through Auchendinny.

Oh and

A9 north to Dalwhinnie Distillery, over the top to Spean Bridge, down to Fort William, then A82 to Crianlarich to Crieff, Perth and back to Edinburgh.

Sorry but can't remember all the road numbers but great roads.

I am slightly biased but you could do worse than take the coast road down to North Berwick (40mins) - it's a lovely town with some great beaches (Yellowcraigs beach near Dirleton is great. I am lucky enough to live a the top of the road down to it!).

Not the most scenic drive but a nice place to visit if you fancy a walk on the beach/harbour and some fish and chips.

Thanks for the suggestions, much apprechiated. Will run them past the Mrs and will let you know where we ended up.

Only problem is that I suspect the hire car will be something rubbish!

Really enjoying Edinburgh (my first visit to Scotland). Will be checking out the Hogmanay opening this evening :-)

Except the A9, if you do this be aware that the A9 will have unmarked police cars on it.

You could hire a Morgan from RPM at Perth!

Train to and from Perth. The road from Edinburgh to Perth is boring Motorway anyway.

Think ( from memory ) that at Crainlarech you'll need not to turn right to follow the A82 ,but take the A85 through Lochearnhead etc.

OH -and at this time of year (epecially in Glencoe) watch out for deer ,from the small ones ( look like small shaggy GS dogs )to full blown 12 pointers .

Thanks again everyone for the advice. In the end decided to go with tim0409's suggestion of North Berwick and the views on the A198 certainly didn't disappoint. I also headed back to Edinburgh airport using only country roads which involved finding some great little villages.

The hire car also turned out to be perfectly suited to these roads:
(Taken at the top of Milsey Bay).

Thanks for all the suggestions. Very much enjoyed spending New Years Day driving around in Scotland smile
