Hi, my GF is wanting to have all their family home movies transfered to DVD as a Xmas present. They have 21 VHS cassettes to do.

Can anybody recommend anwhere in the Glasgow area to provide this service?? I spoke to one guy that I found on Yell, but on appearing at his premises, they really didn't inspire confidence!! Lol.

Cheers.

Pretty sure you can do this yourself fairly easily now with a piece of software available for £20-£30.

For the amount they will charge for 21 tapes you may as well buy them a DVD recorder.

If you get the correct cables you can save your videos to your computer, then use DVD Santa (cheap or free if you know where to look online) to convert them to DVD format and burn to disc.

If however you want to get a company to do a fancy job: Cameron Video on Burnfield Road, Giffnock G46 can do it, dunno their number, on the iPhone.
If you live nearby south side I could give you the DVD Santa.

I thought about doing it myself. I priced a Video/DVD Recorder, but upon speaking to folk, a DVD will only take 2hrs record time from a Tape. I would have done it if it was a case of hitting play and record, but stopping/starting/editing (almost!) isn't my thing so thought it best left to the pros. There's too many memories on these cassettes for me to risk screwing up. My GF is already paranoid about giving them to the pros!! Lol.

As far as copying it to my computer, then onto DVD, my Laptop only has a DVD ROM on it, no writer, so would have to buy a writer as well. Probably far easier paying someone. A few places were willing to do it for £9 per tape because there were so many of them, not too bad really in comparison with buying the equipment.

How does the DVD Santa work Johny? I'm guessing I hook up an old VHS to my Computer, record to my Computer, then write to DVD? I'm really not that great with Computers so would need to be super simple!! Lol. I will give Cameron Video a call tomorrow and see what they say, thanks.

DVD Santa is a program I was put onto years ago that converts different video files into DVD so you can burn and use in your regular DVD player.

Say if YOU (not me) were to download a movie from tinterweb which is maybe an Xvid or AVI format or something, like most are compressed this way. Then DVD Santa turns it into a DVD. Simples smile

Cameron Video get a good reputation though I've heard they are expensive, maybe because they do a lot of corporate stuff. They do all the SPL videos etc, worth a call though.

There is a guy with a stall in Shandwick Shopping Centre in Easterhouse who charges a tenner per tape. Could maybe negotiate a deal if doing 21?

I gave him the one and only copy of my wedding video and it has copied well - doesn't do any fancy editing or anything.
