Shocking that this has been stolen - wonder where this will end up with all publicity it is getting?

Also would have thought something like this would have had a Tracker / Tracking device of some sort fitted?

A specialist ambulance which takes sick children to hospital from across Scotland has been stolen from outside an on-call medic's home.

The brand new Subaru Forester 4x4 was recently donated by the Yorkhill Children's Foundation and takes youngsters to intensive care units in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Strathclyde Police said keys to the vehicle were stolen after a break-in at a house in Thomson Avenue in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, sometime between Sunday night and 7am on Monday.

"Police inquiries are ongoing," a force spokeswoman added.

Dr Jim Beattie, associate medical director of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde women's and children's services, said: "We are shocked and saddened that a brand new Paediatric ITU (Intensive Care Unit) Retrieval Vehicle, recently donated by the Yorkhill Children's Foundation, has been stolen.

"The vehicle had been taken home by a member of the paediatric ITU team who was on-call and it was stolen from their driveway. It is hugely disappointing that someone would steal such a vehicle especially as it is very clearly marked as a paediatric ITU vehicle.

"If anyone has any information about this vehicle we would urge them to contact Strathclyde Police."

It's now been found - burnt out in Ferguslie Park (which says all you need to know really).

A 35-year-old man has been arrested over the theft of a specialist support vehicle which allows medics to attend sick children across Scotland.

The Subaru Forester 4x4 was taken from outside an on-call medic's home in Renfrewshire at the weekend.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said the vehicle had been found at a waste ground site in the Ferguslie Park area of Paisley.

She said it had been "completely burnt out" and was "totally wrecked".

The keys to the vehicle were thought to have been taken during a break-in at house in Thompson Avenue in Johnstone, sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Police said a 35-year-old man was being being held in connection with an alleged theft by house-breaking.

He is due to appear at Paisley Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Quick response

The specialist vehicle was used to allow medics to attend to young people before they are taken by ambulance to intensive care units in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The vehicle was recently donated by the Yorkhill Children's Foundation.

It said the vehicle was often used when the paediatric ambulance was already in use or was not fast enough.

Intensive care staff also used the car to respond to emergencies from home when on call.

Shona Cardle, chief executive of Yorkhill Children's Foundation, said: "The theft of this life-saving response vehicle is not just a car theft.

"This is a vital life-saving vehicle which is used to ensure the quick response needed to save the lives of sick children and babies from all over Scotland."

Absolute scum. Actually, an embarrassment to "normal" scum is probably more appropriate.

That really is the lowest of the low. Stealing an ambulance dedicated for kids and then leaving it burnt out should reserve you a special place in hell. furious

Good news, subaru uk are replacing the vehicle free of charge.

Copied from their facebook page:

Many of you have been asking about the recent theft of a Subaru Forester ambulance in Scotland. We recently released this statement to the local press: "Subaru UK was deeply saddened to hear that a Forester 2.0D XC donated last year to the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation, and co-ordinated by the Colin McRae Vision Charity, was stolen at 7:00 am on Tuesday, 20 September, 2011 and has since been discovered burnt out.

The £24,070 paediatric vehicle was stolen from outside an on-call medic’s home. It provided invaluable support to sick children from all over Scotland, transporting young patients swiftly and safely from rural areas, to intensive care units in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Edinburgh-based Subaru dealership, A F Noble & Son, will be supplying the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation with a replacement vehicle while Subaru UK complete preparations for a replacement Forester free-of-charge.

This is expected to be delivered within the next fortnight. Marketing Director of Subaru UK, Kenyon Neads, commented: “Mindless acts of theft and arson such as this defy logic and have a huge impact on the lives of others. Everyone here at Subaru UK was devastated to hear the news and we are doing everything we can to return Scotland’s only specialist children’s ambulance service back to normality.” We will give you more information, including details of the handover of the replacement vehicle, as soon as we have them.

Agree, good on them. Great bit of publicity at the same time too (not that I hold that against them!).

Yeah full marks to them, but surely it was insured? New for old replacement if under a year old?

Does the NHS not self-insure for things like this and so they would just be paying for a new one out of the coffers?

If I am correct. self insuarance is where you pay a bond for third party cover but you just fund all own repairs yourself. So in that respect, yes with Subaru replacing it, this would save them money.

Though a bit of a grey area if the ambulance is actually used by the Yorkhill Charity as opposed to the NHS side of it.
