A9 average speed cameras
Discussion
I really detest driving on average speed enforced roads. It’s not quite so bad if I’m driving something with cruise, and the traffic conditions allow cruise to be used.
Otherwise, I just find it makes for a very unrelaxed experience, and moreover, the traffic always seems so much more bunched up and close together on the SPECS sections.
The difference is immediately apparent south of Stirling where the SPECS end - the flow of traffic is far more natural, in my opinion.

Not sure why that's happening. Tried "google" instead of "goo.gl" but no joy, confused........
Must be something on this PC!...
Some are links to earlier (2008) Streetview links of the junction being discussed.
Off to do a virus scan!

I've not heard of anyone that has been charged with speeding by the average speed cameras on the A9, but apparently there has been a few:

I'm wondering why they would only penalise 50% of the detected speeding offences, and assuming some of the fines were from normal camera vans the figure would be even less from the average cameras. It does make you wonder how well they are working - I haven't noticed any major changes in driving behaviour over the periods they mention.

I’ve noticed there are fewer cameras. Where the road has been dualed north of Perth they have not been replaced. Between Perth and Dunblane there used to be two cameras on each gantry, now there is only one per gantry. I wonder if they are even turned on?
Interesting thought. I just assumed that the software had been upgraded so that 1 camera catches both lanes.matchmaker said:

I'd love to know what the lowest speed conviction has been! I sit at 68 on the cruise control and have done many, many journeys up and down the A9 from Perth to GoSpey.
More to the point, what kind of moron averages 127mph in a 60 (or maybe 70) mph average speed zone? I've driven the perth to inverness section of the A9 about 6 times in the last 2 years.
Going by the behaviour of other road users the cameras are only active on the single carriageway sections.
Most obvious was the number of vans doing exactly 50 then doing vMax for the dc then back to 50 again for the single carriageway.

There are no average speed cameras on any of the dual carriageway sections between Broxden and Longman roundabouts.Going by the behaviour of other road users the cameras are only active on the single carriageway sections.

and you will only ever see police cars and camera vans on the dual carriageway sections between Perth and Inverness IME.
I have had a couple of close shaves with both on the long stretch of DC south of Drumochter and the stretch south of Ralia.
You will see some of the more experienced users of the road nailing it just after the last camera before the DC starts, and not slowing down at the end of the DC much until the first camera.

I dont know if it has been covered, but I am not reading 23 pages. Are all the cameras front facing? I am getting the train to inverness to pick up a motorbike to ride home, can the cameras catch a bike?
Rear facing, so yes they can catch you. But, for the 60 zone you can sit at 68 without being in danger of a ticket. The Inverness to Perth sections of dual carriageway are not covered by the ASC's so watch for cops and mobile cameras.Gassing Station | Scotland | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
