Someone might be able to help here... Looking for a ring, 1500ish budget maybe to 2000 at the absolute most.!

It wants to be quite plain, platinum with a central square diamond. I've looked at the usual highstreet places and there's some nice ones and also things like 0% makes it more appealing than a big hole in the bank account (to me 1500 is a lot of money)

The questions are as i know nothing about jewellery; how good are the rings on the highstreet? and does anyone know any small independant jewellers who might do me one as good as the highstreet ones for cheaper or a better quality one for the same money!?

Thanks!

I assume congratulations are in order.

You infer about getting more for your money. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount. Don't know how it works in all jewellers but if you can't come away with 10% discount I would be disappointed. My local gives 10% as soon as they see me. I should bargain more.

I realise this may be alien to some - Brits are not used to it - but you are looking at a high ticket item with a good mark up. Family owned / independents will have more space to manoeuvre as decisions can be made more easily.

My friend has one for sale in your price bracket, he had it on ebay but it didn't sell, here is the link to the page and you can contact him through ebay if you like it:

Try Queensbury Jewellers on Kirkstall road in Leeds m8. Highly recommended. Just opposite the entrance to the retail park.

Berry's sell very good quality but they are not cheap. I would take a drive over to Guest and Phillips in the Market Place, Beverley. Very good family jewelers and they get some very nice older rings in as well. Good luck.

Philip Stoner were very good with me when I bought one, not afraid to do a discount either.

If you are OK going out of Leeds then there are a couple of nice places on the road near Salts Mill in Saltaire and a decent selection in the actual mill too.

I agree with Philip Stoner, we've used them for last few years. Bought wedding rings plus they service our watches and look after my wife's engagement ring.
I know you said Leeds but the best option is to go to Hatton Garden. You can buy the best diamond for your money and then get your local jeweller to make the ring of your choice.
I used Ogdens of Harrogate to make my wife's and it wasn't as expensive as you'd think.
Lister Horsfall is another option.

Perhaps consider an alternative......

These guys made my wife's engagement ring (and our wedding rings).

http://www.weddingringworkshop.co.uk/

That made it bespoke and unique, which added a huge amount of kudos with my (now) wife. As it is specially made, you can choose a combination of diamond(s) and metal to suit your budget/design. They were also signficantly cheaper than any retailer. All I did was take a picture of what I wanted to them (it was a Tiffany style item) and they made it. She is still over the moon with it.

As an added bonus, if you want, you can then spend a day or so with your wife making each others' wedding rings at their workshops.

Initially I was put off by the odd location of their London workshop, but these guys did a wonderful job.

By the way, I have no affiliation with them whatsoever and, baring any mishaps, will not need to use them again!

I have used Berrys in Leeds for quiet a few things but for the engagement ring we used Lister Horsfall would recommend.

Try Doltons (opposite the Grand).

I know they've got a good ring on sale for about that budget because they bought it off me recently - cost me far more. It's been reset so it is a new ring.

From memory the diamond it .73ct DIF in a princess cut - you should be able to compare prices to check that it's sensible.

Paul is a nice chap and offers sensible advice, even if it means he doesn't get a sale.

Congratulations - I'll avoid being negative due to my past experience wink

Phillip Stoner in the Light did me well last year. Exactly what I was looking for, with cracking service as well smile

tbh I just walked round as many as I could and picked the ring I liked most. Then barter, the price may fall by quite a few quid pretty quick wink

Hi there,

Try 365 diamond.

I have never used these but they have always beaten high street prices and I looked all over online and saw some good reviews.

Couple people moaned about speed of delivey but everyone said quality of diamonds was as should be.

Its where I would go if I was about to pop question. good luck!

My family use Toll House in Riponden, Halifax.
My bro got his engagement/wedding rings done there. All bespoke hand crafted work, platinum and diamonds, not any mass produced high street rubbish. He came all the way from London to have them made here as for the money no where in London could touch the quality.

they don't have a fancy shop - what they do have is knowledge and lots of it.
its worth a look if you want something bespoke that she'll never see again.
they made a ring for my gf's birthday, cost me £500, insurance valued it at £900 - exceptional quality.

I have worked with both owners in the past and had my wife's wedding ring custom made by them.

+1! We've used Toll House for ages and they catered for our wedding earlier this year, making both my ring and my wife's engagement ring. Ian is a true craftsman and both he and his wife Jean are really keen to help. Far better than the Leeds city centre options, IMHO.
