And a move to Leeds

I've been offered a brilliant new job in the Kirkstall area. It means relocating to your lovely county from Hampshire which is something my wife and I are keen to do anyway.

We'd like to live somewhere rural, preferably with space for her equestrian thing but I don't want to have another long commute. No sense in relocating to get another hour and a half commute

So, can anyone recommend some nice areas to live? Likely to be renting initially while we sort ourselves out but buying ultimately

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the north wavey. I made the move to York 3 years ago and love it up here (unfortunaetly I'm heading half way south in the new year). There is a good social crowd in Yorkshire and I'm sure one of the Leeds locals will be along soon with some suggestions on locations.

What sort of length commute were you thinking of ? There are some good places north of Leeds in the Dales which would suit the countryside requirement.

Hi Bob

Sounds like you're not looking forward to moving southwards again. I can understand that, York is beautiful.

I currently commute from Hampshire into London, takes around an hour and three quarters each way. Thats far too much in my opinion.

I'd be happy with up to 45 mins I guess. Does that rule the Dales out?

unfortunately, yes.

It can take 45 mins to get in from just 10 miles out. Obviously depending on which arterial route you come in on.

Top tip from me (having worked in Leeds and done horsey thing, ex-owning a livery yard) would be Baildon. 15mins in "crack of dawn" empty roads - 30 to 45 mins in with traffic. I know one of the guys from Brilliant Media who had recently moved there and he loves it. I have lived at Baildon, East Morton and Harden and commuted to Leeds with ease.

Another good value for money area is south of Leeds towards Wakefield. VERY handy for M1/M62 to visit back down south (whereas it will take you 40 mins to get to M62/M1 junction from Baildon area) some nice villages and cheaper than north Leeds.

But ... do yourself a favour and have a look around York / Selby ... the value for money really gets interesting then yes ok, your commute may be 45 mins to an hour, but you are right on the edge of East and North Yorkshire with easy access to the coast and all those camera free open Wolds and moorland roads... once again, very easy access to motorways.

What agency are you joining? (if an agency). I work for one of the Manchester agencies and I live in Goole. 83m door to door but at the time I go in it only takes 1hr 20 ... and the quality of life is tremendous

Welcome ... you won't regret it!

Burriana, you're sharp

It is an Agency, in Kirkstall, which should narrow it down! Who do you work for, still on the media side?

Tell me more about the livery business....thats my Wife's preferred option. Is it financially viable?

Thanks for the tips on the best places, keep 'em coming

Could be a few Stephen ... Poulters, Brahms, not sure who else is left or has set up down there these days.

I've never been on the media side, we just use Brilliant as our media independents. We used to use Carat/Brand Connection in London until a couple of years ago. I work for BCMB, we are mainly retail, national press & TV and more recently a lot of multi-media web work, both building and stats.

Livery wise... there is an awful lot of people doing it, and people don't pay as much up here as they do down south. My ex had one of the best yards in the area at Hawksworth, purpose built, 36 acres of good grazing and it was still a struggle to make any money.

Now, if you could find a place to live with a few loose boxes in the outbuildings THEN, it could make a nice bit of pin money, but I wouldn't like to rely on the income. Also sitting up in the middle of the night with sick horses loses its appeal after a while

Oh, and there's also the inconvenience of having young girls in jodphurs wandering around all over the place!

Its Gratterpalm. Role as a CSD with responsibility for business development, organic and new business. Its just off the Kirkstall road.

We're more leaning towards the outbuildings with a few stables to earn a little extra - something for my Wife to do and it all helps pay the bills.

Girls in Jodhpurs.....the only upside of horse ownership!

oh dear! We are so busy building client websites that the job "update BCMB website" has been constantly put to the side for the last 12 months!

A better showcase for our web abilities would be www.moben.co.uk

I know of Gratterpalm, they are in the old mill buildings aren't they? CSD? Client Services Director or Creative Services Director? If it's the former then we share the same job

The former, we're officially rivals

Yes, the old mill building, its a nice spot. Please tell me you've heard good things about them....not too good though, I'll have nothing to do otherwise

The moben work is very good, nice job.

Congrats, same kinda thing here, but I'll be looking at South Midlands (commutable to Royal Leamington Spa).

Totally agree with Al regarding income from a Livery yard around these parts though, especially the ladies in joddies FYI we pay £25/wk DIY, £45/wk FULL livery!

If it's in the kirkstall area, the train in might be an option, although the stop is actually headingley. the train line runs from Leeds to Harrogate and there's some rural areas on that line. I love Yorkshire and leeds, but traffic to and from the area is appalling. And I live in it.

Like I said, not good to make a living from it though!

Don't really know much about Gratterpalm except that they have been around for years. They used to be just a little artwork/photgraphic services kind of a place that has grown and grown.

What kind of agency have you come from? feel free to email me off forum (use the clicky button on my profile), I'm happy to help with any info about the locale or whatever Stephen

Leeds is great for bars, clubs, restaurants, shopping ... arguably better than Manchester in my opinion.

Too right there but I could not find a job I like locally. Feel free to pop along to the drinks on the 3rd Feb if you up here by then and fancy a trip into York.
