I've been wondering this for a while.. what's the speed limit on here?? I'm never sure and my insurance is enough without acquiring any unnecessary points!

Aye, up. Through the section with all the SPECS cameras it is 60 mph. 100% sure.

Ahh well glad I'm not the only one who wasn't too sure. I could believe it was 60, because a bit further on there are signs saying 50 - slow down. As if to suggest you were going faster.

I remember all the bad press about it, but was more concerned because isn't it supposed to be haunted! eek

uh uh ... FROM GOOGLE

"SPECS cameras lurk on the A616 Stocksbridge bypass in South Yorkshire. This is a purpose-built single carrigeway bypass with little or no properties bordering it. The speed limit has been reduced from NSLA to 50mph with no justification whatsoever other than to raise more cash."

I always thought the speed limit was 10mph less for females as they are not as good drivers as males

I travel the By pass on a regular basis and this is what I do with no convictions to date.

Travelling towards M1

Leaving the Flouch Round about, Nationals 60MPH
Langsett Village signs and camera 40MPH
Leave Vilage signs 50MPH
Approach junction signs and camera at 40MPH
Leave junction and signs at 50MPH

All simple so far

Out side the bridon factory Nationals sign and the specs start 60MPH
Climb the hill on dual carridgeway 70MPH
Reduce to single carridgeway at top of hill 60MPH
Opens to Dual caridgeway at the bottom of the hill 70MPH
Reduces to single carridgeway at the top of the hill back to 60MPH all the way to the Motorway.

According to Nationals speed limits the speeds are 60MPH on single carridgeways and on dual carridgeways the limit is 70MPH in a car.

It may be worth noting that the specs only seem to be on the single carridgeway sections with cameras at the start and finish of the dual carrideway sections.

I may be wrong but I have been doing this road like this for the last 4 years, every day for 2 years of these with no convictions or seen any accidents.

You need to remember the big black numbers you see on white backgrounds in the red circle's. They are on large grey poles, usually near the edge of the road. I think they're the speed limits.

If you don't see repeater signs and the road has lighiting (doesn't have to be light), assume it's a 30 (other speed limits always have repeater signs).

If you see a black diagonal across a white circular background, it's the 'GLF'.

Ooh, sorry, came over all un-necessary and a bit SteveF then

I'll blame him for leading me astray - Steve, you are out for a beer Friday aren't you?

Lots of stuff about speed limits & dual carriageways

I used to travel down here regularly a few years back & don't remember any dual carriageway sections between Langsett & the M1. Just google mapped the route and still can't see any,.... or am i having a 'senior moment'?

The dual caridgeway sections are going up the hills in both directions. Some may argue they are overtaking lanes for slow lorries but there are no signs stating either, the fact remains there are two lanes.

Ahh, I see the misunderstanding.

Two lanes isn't a dual carriageway. A dual carriageway is where the traffic in opposite directions is seperated by a physical barrier, be it a raised kerb or more usually crash barriers. You could have three lanes in each direction but if they aren't seperated then it's still a single carriageway and the limit is 60.

Hmmmm, Apologies Stepej, I see what you mean.

It would appear I have been a tad lucky the last four years. Will be taking it steadier in the morning as I head to the M1

There was one about a guy who got 4 speeding summons' in 4 weeks and got off scot free because of the bad warning signage.

Like I said earlier .. ring the trafiic cops!

From the Sheffield/Barnsley side, first bit with dual lane areas is 60mph.

As it drops down into the trees after Stocksbridge its 50mph.

Through the village 40mph

Back up to 50mph for a bit.

The 40mph for the second village.

The up to 50mph again.

The the last little stretch to the Flouch roundabout is back up to 60mph.

Complicated isn't it? Although my guide is....

60mph though the specs cameras, then nail it and hit the brakes at each village!!!! And watch out for the ghosts of children dancing round the pylon.

laugh Thanks, that's good advice - I'll look out for those

Seriously though, where I come onto the bypass there aren't any signs. Has anyone been caught speeding on there, or know someone who has? and what speed were you/they clocked at?
