Beware Card Cloning- Leeds filling station
Discussion
Just got a call from my bank's security dept to tell me my card had been cloned when I filled up at a filling station on the York Rd in Leeds a fortnight ago.
Thieiving sods tried to make a withdrawl tonight.
Always thought I was careful with my cards.
Never let them out of your sight!!

The classic scam is to ask for your card, then tell you that you haven't put the pump nozzle back into the holster onthe pump properly. You go out to check it, and the scroat behind the counter swipes your card through a reader under the counter, before putting it into the keypad device on the counter top before you return.
Happened to me a few years ago in Otley at the SAVE garage. ALl the transactions were around Greengates, where there just happened to be another SAVE petrol station. I could prove I was on the south coast that weekend, and the bank reimbursed no quibble.

As just said, always keep an eye/hand on your card. One of the few advantages with Chip and Pn is that the sales staff have no reason to touch your card. I have just returned from the States and was pretty perturbed when restaurant staff would go off with your card and return 5 minutes later, and I didn't need to sign or enter a pin number at all.
I can recommend a particularly good Esso site in Halifax which definitely is not involved in cloning...

I work in the credit/debit card fraud business and its not just the fact that the assistant may swipe your card in a 2nd terminal hidden under the counter. This issue you are referring to relates to a nationwide 'petrol retailer' fraud, resulting in major UK Banks loosing millions in the past 2 weeks.
The way they are doing this is the terminal you place your card into has been replaced with a 'rigged' one which not only captures that data from the magstripe but also your PIN. This data is automatically transmitted via GPRS very frequently to someone nearby. Your data is then written onto a white card and sold along with your PIN for a tidy sum!!
Cash is then withdrawn from international ATM's which still read the magstripe and not the CHIP. Why do you think they have targetted petrol retailers??? High volume traffic thats the reason why. I mean how many shops have a thru put of well in excess of 100 customers per hour.
CHIP & PIN was hailed as the way to combat card fraud but all it has done is make it easier for the fraudsters to obtain the 'gem of gem's'.....CASH!!!!
Take a step back....less than 2% of the UK cards population withdrew cash from their credit cards (thus requiring a PIN)....since the advent of CHIP & PIN, 99% of the cards population now use a PIN for purchases. Simply put its provided the fraudsters with easy access to cash which before they couldnt withdraw cash from an ATM as the customer would sign and not use a PIN. They were having to purchase goods to convert into cash but all CHIP & PIN has done is assist fraudsters by increasing PIN usage by 100%

What filling station? I use some of the ones around there, it would be good to know what one to avoid.
On the left going in to Leeds on the York Road, just before the roundabout near Killingbeck police station. Luckily had failed to include expiry date on the clone so was intercepted by the banks security dept.

A definate NO, NO. Never ever let the card out of your sight, either go with them, or have them bring the machine to you, not 100 percent secure of course, but its the best safeguard you can do,
