My flat in Leeds is almost sold (waiting on contracts) but we're stuck on where to go next. Paola likes Shadwell area but realistically we can get a lot more for our money elsewhere. She wants relatively easy commuting, I want easy access to the countryside for hooning and paragliding (or a combination of both). I would also like a double garage but I'm willing to sacrifice that if it has everything else I want.

Anyway, to the point. I've seen a nice place in Otley, a fair bit bigger than what we have now. It's on the east side of town near the Rugby club and everything seems within walking distance for the shops, etc.
I don't really know Otley except that it seemed like a nice enough place anytime I've been there (and supposedly it has more pubs per head than a lot of other places in the UK ). It has what I need and the train station at Menston means easy commuting for Paola.
Can anybody offer their impressions of the place (good and bad but mainly good so I can convince her ). I know the traffic can be bad at rush hour but where isn't these days. What about crime? How good are the drinking establishments? Any trouble in town? That kind of thing.

Email me through my profile if you want

Cheers
Andy

There a few back street short cuts to miss the traffic and the pubs are great. Living wise, well its a hub for getting to different places like work!! And as you say there are some great roads just out of town. At least if you move out of Leeds you will not be a Leeds Loiner. Oh and its a quick fast drive to HHC.

Yep, it's got alot better over the last 10 years.

That side of town is also pretty nice, especially the Riverside estate area (right hand side of main road as you head along Farnley road and past the park and school) A few friends from school lived there and it was always quiet and fuss free. Never heard one bad thing personally.

A friend just moved into a new house in Otley (other side of river in a new build), we went out in Otley and to school there for years and vowed never to live there. But it has genuinely moved up in our view, with rising house prices and those out of city locations becoming more popular the general feel of the place is much nicer! Especially where you are looking I can't see any problems at all

Drinking wise, plenty of pubs to choose from, some quite "local" but all friendly enough. My friends and I are starting to find Ilkely nicer but it's just for a change more than anything...

Traffic is never too bad. You can always bob over through Askwith to get to Ilkley/Ben Rhydding for the train to Leeds as getting over the bridge and out towards Burley can be a ball ache at rush hour.

As much as I've heard horror stories I've been out there LOTS. Used to be out every weekend from about 1997>2004 and never once have I seen a fight or any violence. Day time it's merry enough too. Over near Riverside you'll probably be hoping for something exciting to happen it'll be that quiet.

As for roads

Straight up over the moors past Clifton towards the A59 (my favourite road of all time), then carry on up towards Greenhow, then left to Grassington or right to Pately Bridge.
Then if you stay out along the Farnley road you can go up over the back towards Norwood and past the Sun Inn (biker road), or carry on out towards Harrogate and over the back roads up there around Beckwithshaw which are very nice!

You are literally at the foot of the dales. Head anywhere within the 180 degree northern arc from Otley and it's all great driving roads. And to the other side you have the airport, Leeds, Bradford, Otley and Ilkley for ok nights out...

The only downside to otley is its uphill to the chevin... thankfully I live at the top of the hill so I dont have that problem :P

Other than that minor thing it's a nice place.

I kind of expected fairly good reports which should please her (she's fed up with the hassle that goes ith living near a school at the moment).

Fingers crossed the place I'm interested in is still available when I get back home from work.

Good to hear, I was wondering what it would be like as it seems to be a mixture of property (old and new) at all sorts of prices from 100k to 350k and some factory units, car dealers like the Ford place, and some other stuff that I can't quite make out. Where I'm looking at actually looks over the allotments at the side of the rugby club.

I'm at work just now so Google Earth is helping me get an idea of the layout of the place and where everything is. I'll have a proper walk round when I'm home.

Any other reviews. I need material to convince her it's a good move.

Ummm, you on the North side of the river or the South side...

There are rugby fields at both sides

It sounds like you mean over by the Ford Garage now, with old Allotments and Rugby fields to the back. Some new builds down that street, some just being finished, and around that area it is old big terraces!?!?

Show me on a map as it sounds pretty much next door to where my friend has just moved into his new build...!?

Also one of the nicer areas down that end of Otley... hence why my friend bought down there

Sounds like he means near Stephen Smiths off pool road. Nice place, I looked at renting a place there for a while.

Yep, south side, down by the old primary school on wharfe street.

ETA: I'm away offline for a few days so if anybody has anything to add I'll be back by the weekend (I hope)

Ah yeah, thats where my friend and his wife have recently bought their new-build about 6 months ago (onto the back of the old school)

It's a nice street, several of my brothers school friends/parents have lived down there for years and never had any fuss, and that end of Otley as said is nice!

I'd go for one if I had £300k spare. Not sure on the prices now but my friend has done very nicely within the 6 months he's had his already. I'm not sure if the boom can carry on but it seems to be quite healthy in Otley right now.

If you have any specific questions then fire away.

Cheers

In that case we might end up neighbours assuming I can convince the missus!!! I'm looking at one of the other ones that's due to finish soon.

Should know very soon, home on thursday if all goes well. I'll let you know if we go for it. I'll buy you a beer and you can show me the Otley sights if you don't mind.

Sounds like the one your looking at is the last one to sell, the middle one of the three?

Look nice now they are finished

Yep, that would be the one. The internals still need to be finished but other than that it's almost ready.
