I have a car for a day tomorrow and I quit fancy a quick trip to somewhere around York. Despite living here for six years or so I've never really been outside.

So... what is there to do/see within, say, 10 miles of york (mileage limit).

Air museum at Elvington. Might also be a track (airfield) day on.

Castle Howard? Not sure if it's <10 miles though.

Railway museum. Great day out, with or without ankle biters.

Is that the national railway museum? I've been there a few times and you're right, it's great.

I'm going to change the request to some "fun" roads in and around York? Quiet twisty country B roads. I fancy "acquainting" myslef with the car's handling

Go out toward Hull and use the roads round weaverthorpe, fimble and sledmere - they're brilliant!

York Maze. Follow the signs round the ring road. I will be going tomorrow for a bit of a walk - couple of guys from work reckon its worth a visit.

Aldwalk has roman remains to visit if thats your thing.

Fountains Abbey is also woth a visit but maybe outside the 10 mile limit.

B1363 out of York to Sutton on the Forest, then Huby/Crayke/Oulston/Coxwold detour via Byland Abbey to Kilburn, then up the twisty back road to the top of Sutton Bank. Then down the fast A170 (if its quiet) in the direction of Helmsley, then cut across via Scawton and Rievaulx to the north end of Helmsley. Through Helmsley on the B1257 to Slingsby and thence Malton, A64 back in to York. Alternatively, if feeling daring, head east out of Helmsley via Kirbymoorside to Hutton-Le-Hole. There is a 1 in 3 gradient near there, and it goes around a hairpin.

I suspect that's quite a bit more than 10 miles though.
