Optimax Nightmare
Discussion
Greetings All,
Just driven from the A64 to the A19 round the York ring-road and noticed that the Shell garage on the Poppleton roundabout has been sold to Total. Does anyone know where I can get Optimax in or around York?

Thanks a lot for that John, guess that is my new petrol station. Thanks to you petros and telecat for also getting back to me, never really used Ultimate as wanted the 98RON stuff and there is a 99RON Tesco at Clifton Moor but something my local garage man said has made me switch from 'cheap' petrol. His argument is that you get what you pay for - BP and Shell both stick a load of additives into their fuel which not only clean the engine but lubricate fuel pumps etc. He said over the last 5 yrs or so he has had so many cars coming in needing petrol pumps etc replacing (and not just cheap cars either, expensive Mercs and BMWs) which never used to happen. His belief (and that of the motor trade) was that the 'cheap' petrol you buy from supermarkets is just that - petrol and nothing else. He recommended using 'decent' stuff with the various additives.
With no other reason I switched to Optimax. I might be tempted to give the 99RON stuff a try though and see how the old chap gets on.
Thanks guys.

Have to say I use Tesco 95 in mine, well happy.
I think this business about supermarket petrol being crap is just that. My V6 Mondeo has run on the stuff for the last 95,000 miles, no probs and don't know anyone else who has had any grief.
From what I understand, the petrol is identical, the only difference is the tanker driver empties a tub of additives into she Shell stuff. But who really knows, or cares for that matter.
From various sources, only certain cars will take any advantage of the higher RON values, so unless your manual tells you to use 98/99/102 I personally wouldn't bother, IMHO of course.

I bought some BP Ultimate Diesel the other day, in fact £60 of the stuff (102p/l)
Am I mad?

Too early to notice a difference, but ask me at the end of the tank.
Would I go faster just by turning off the air-con? Don't ask...

With the car remapped for it, I'm sure the increase in Cetane rating (or whatever it is that chip fat gives in the way of combustive power ) would help. With it mapped for standard, I'd not expect miracles at all.
For the VAGmobile, I'm more likely to insert a resister to "tweak" the temperatures to improve performance & economy than I am to switch fuel (given BP are extortionate to begin with, let alone any premium sunflower-oil they sell!)
