Can anybody tell me what the new small, white cameras are that are currently being installed on the A64 (A1 intersection towards York)? A couple are just at the start of this stretch where the police sit and then a few more have appeared on the bridges (including the new one). I have never seen this type before. Thanks.

I've been up that way myself today and noticed them too. I took them to be traffic monitoring rather than anything more serious. Hope I'm not wrong.

Is that not where they set up the mobile ANPR cameras? Could possibly be something more permanant?

Also there have been more Scameras on the A64 (near the Fox & Grapes I think) and in and around Aberford, where it goes from 30 to 50/60 at either end. Not seen them but Mrs Johnny has.

Cheers,

Johny

I noticed the ones close to the A1 but did not notice any more - it was fairly busy and I was concentrating on the traffic and keeping my speed to something reasonable as I did not know what the new cameras where for.

I've noticed a few locations using them - top of the M1, A64 as mentioned, and on the M56 near Runcorn. In all the places there has also been a van parked on the bridge with 'Traffic Survey' written on the side.

I've looked at the cameras on the new bridge and they look like traffic volume measuring rather than speed measuring ones. They are not SPECS or GATSO, TRUVELO or any other I recognise.

I did find a page whilst having a dig around here.....just scroll past the PhD level stuff to the very last picture! Scary eh?

But the answer lies on this page here as I think they are simply white versions of Traffic Master (sample picture below, not A64)

Some of this stuff is quite old, I saw some early demonstrations about 10 years ago, admittedly with out the speed calculations though. Have also seen various tools that allow accurate measurements taken from 2D camera images, so this doesn't really surprise me.

Those look like some of the cameras on the A180, if so they are just for measuring traffic flow... There's a description on the actual camera, I'm guessing to stop vandalism, that says that it's not a speed camera, doesn't check your tax disc etc. it just measures traffic flow.

Someone was telling me at lunch time that traffic master cameras actually work by grabbing a couple of letters from the number plate and then working out average speed between cameras, and thus knowing where a traffic jam is.

Worse case scenario is that some bright spark realises what a good idea this to catch everyone speeding, since there are millions of the things around.

IIRC the home office approached TrafficMaster and asked if they could use it for that and were told to fk off, the view being that TM is designed to make drivers lives easier not to stitch them up.

Coming home yesterday along the A64 and my origin B2 gave a laser alert, it is not known for spurious alarms so will have to wait and see.
