Hi to you all . My first post on this part of the site. I am moving to Yorkshire during February from the 'sunny south', Berkshire. I am waiting for delivery of my Noble M400 for pleasure but am led to believe you all have some white stuff falling from the sky during winter. Called snow I believe .
Rather than ban my wife from driving for the winter months I am looking to buy a second hand vehicle that will be good in the bad weather up there when it happens. Other than a snow plough or like vehicle what would those of you who have lived in the area for a while recommend.
Budget is limited due to the Noble purchase but I would be grateful for any sensible ideas.
By the way I'm really looking forward to the move as I simply adore your part of the world

Hi Pete

Good choice, oh and I like the Noble too

We've had a few early morning runs out in this neck of the woods, which you'd be most welcome to join, usually starting at 1st light and finishing with a hearty breakfast. Watch this forum for more details.

With regards to a car recommendation, I agree with Rich, depends where you move to as to whether a front wheel drive hatch could cope or not. Not so much stigma in Yorkshire about driving a 4x4. Always a big favourite for country types is the ubiquitous Scoobie - the Legacy 'holdall' comes in a wide variety and state of tune for hoonage and there are plenty of dealers in Yorkshire too.

Now you just have to book in for some 'delocution' lessons to really fit in!

Actually moving to the Northern edge of Bridlington which may not count as Yorkshire to those of you right in the North . I've just retired from the Fire Service so want to get back to the family roots and to a part of the country I love, plus as an ex Merchant Navy Officer I would like to be back near the coast!!

I already have a scoobie but am trying to get away from performance for 'she who must be obeyed' hence the question. I thought about a Defender, real 4x4, but not sure if thats over the top given the area we'll be living and the real world frequency of really bad ice/snow?

When I first moved oop here 5 year ago, my week twas spent driving through t'snow tween York and Ilkley. Hasn't snowed worth a jot since then, but thow doesn't work out o York anymore.

The moral here is that my daily driver is a Mondeo and is fine. My boss lives in back of yonder and gets away with Audi A6 quattro.

So landy may be over the top.

Lovely beaches up there and even a nudist beach

Not too much snow to worry about but said that they were digging out buses two weeks ago!

Front wheel drive narrow tyres will suffice IMO

PS it is Yorkshire even though the map says Humberside!

northern tip of the east riding isn't it?

filey is quite nice, and places like foxholes and burton agnes are agreeable

there's a particularly long straight after the roundabout where the B1253 crosses the B1249 from driffield to scarborough... it's a bumpy narrow country lane which goes steeply downhill...I have fond memories of hurtling down it one evening looking through the viewfinder of a disposable camera as I hit an indicated 112mph in my first ever car, a completely shagged renault 5 campus 1.1...oh happy days, and what a photo

lots of great roads around there, if you want an idea of a few then feel free to drop me a mail

Never knew about the Nudist Beach, where is it! Not that I'll ever go there of course, I just need to know so I can avoid it!

To all who have taken the time to reply so far, many thanks. I think she can stay with her Ka for now then once we've moved I'll get her something slightly bigger maybe with four driven wheels if I can afford it, perhaps a second hand VW. Glad to hear it isn't always deep in the white stuff as I love the sea when its stormy!!

The long flat road referred to is twixt Wetwang and North Grimston (to the woods near Fimber).

Al refers to the 'B road target' for that stretch of road on our Woldz Wazz's.

I take it the scoob's going to make way for the Noble then?

Unfortunately I think that will be necessary in order to pay the insurance
In a perfect world I'd keep the scoob but I think paying the insurance on both may prove a little steep!! I'll keep working on 'er indoors and see what happens

Seems like there are some tasty roads up there for me to enjoy all within the limits of my ability and the law of course!
