Where to live in/near Leeds?

Right then, I've just got a new job :bounce: in Leeds, and I'll be moving up there within a month so I need some advice about where to live!
Ideally I want to live just outside Leeds itself if I can afford it and cycle into work everyday but I could live in Leeds if needs be. I'm working in the South side of the city, so does anyone know any small villages / towns within 5 miles of the south side of Leeds that are relatively cheap to live in?
I'll be renting until I find somewhere to buy.

Agree with Mike. Pretty much what he says is spot on.
I live in North Leeds, near Roundhay Park. It's quite nice. More expensive than Headingley but cheaper than Harrogate/Pool/Otley. City centre is about 5-10 mins on bike/car, cycle lanes down to town. Depends where you are working though.
If you fancy a look round I'm home in a couple of weeks (for 4 weeks off) and am quite happy to go for a ride out or a drive and show you the areas.
You should be here just in time for 'Cars in the Park'
Edited to say 'doh' just read that you are south side. Anyway south side isn't great. Morley is probably best option in south Leeds.

Leeds is a little "lop sided" with the centre sort of "low" on the map. The South of the city has Belle Isle, Middleton And Beeston in it and is quite crowded, think Early century Terraces and 50's / 60's Council estates. What part of Leeds are you working in? As a general recomendation Chapel Allerton is close to the centre and has a 'Cafe Bar' reputation with evening life being very important. Lots of Bars and restaurants but with the housing away from the "busy" areas. It came upmarket as Students who wished to live in Leeds found the area cheap but with decent shopping areas. ost of the the Houses have been brought up to modern standards. The lower areas of Moortown which has mainly family houses have also benefitted. North Leeds is the best area but the Villages dotted around the edges are even better. The problem is that everybody knows it and the prices are high.
Headingley is the big student area but is fairly reasonable on price!
South of the city is Beeston/Wortley kind of territory which although it has a huge Ferrari/Porsche dealer isn't the nicest part of town.
If you are looking a little further out you can head to Morley which is kind of outside the city.
It depends on where you are working really as there are some very nice places in the city centre but they will cost a bomb to rent.
One final tip though, don't live in Batley - I did and it's terrible

Hey Nige, welcome to the North. Although Fakenham is lovely, I know someone who lives there, but i can imagine it being a tad quiet!
With you being a Science Technician I can only take a wild guess that you will be looking to buy and that you have an average sort of budget.
In which case look south, just the other side of the M62. Vicki's parents have just moved from Tingley / East Ardsley and this is quite nice, on the edge of the open country but only 10 mins into city centre in the car, maybe 20 on bike. - £10/£15 in a cab after a heavy night out. Also 2 mins from M62/M1 junction.
What sort of place are you looking for?
With you being a Science Technician I can only take a wild guess that you will be looking to buy and that you have an average sort of budget.
In which case look south, just the other side of the M62. I would say tingle is just about the right sort of distance from leeds centre, fairly eas to get to the centre of leeds, and easy to get out to countyside for a hooning.
If not dewsbury is (nearly) great. But probably a bit too far from leeds for you

Does anyone know of any decent letting agents around Leeds? I'm not going to have much time to organise anything so I'd rather avoid any dodgy agents.

However Upper Batley is very desirable, a few famous people and me live there !!

If you're working on Wellington Street then I wouldn't class that as South Leeds - it's more or less bang centre. Straight onto Kirkstall Road and out to Rodley/Pudsey/Horsforth/Cookridge etc which are north and I'm sure you'll find something more than reasonable.

Oi!! Rothwell is OK. Good feel for an ex mining community. Nowhere near as expensive as North Leeds, a lot closer to countryside (rhubarb triangle anyone?) and far less up its own @rse.
Not going to be street cafes and delis in the very near future but more secure and homley than some of the more faceless areas of Leeds.
Think that should have upset most people!!

We moved to Leeds three years ago; spending our first 6 months in rented accommodation until we bought. The house was rented through Hunters, who were a decent enough agency to use. To give you an indication, we rented a small brand new unfurnished 3 bed town house in north Leeds, it cost £850pm. At the time, 2 bed appts in the city were also ~£800 to £1000pm. My collegues tell me that, at present, renting a one bed appt in a new(ish) city centre development is likely to be in the region of £500pm upwards.
As for area, as many have said the most desired, but expensive areas, are in north leeds, that isn't to say that the south is undesirable, but there are bits of it that are
! Oh and to throw in my 2p's worth, if I were moving to Leeds and trying to establish a social life, I'd live either in the city centre or in Headingley. The city because it makes getting to work easy and cheap(!) and also makes after work beers much easier, plus there is plenty to see and do right on your doorstep. Headingley has a large student population and the housing is reasonably priced, there are always plenty of people out and about in some decent bars.
Finally, when I moved here 3 years ago I didn't know anyone, but I've got some great mates now, lots of them through PH. Come out and meet us all, we are a pretty sociable bunch. As others have said,
