What to do in Thirsk.

I've been bought a tour of the James Herriot museum and we are going to stay up there a night or two. What is there to do around Thirsk?
Not a lot. It's a small Yorkshire market town.Dales to the west, Hambleton Hills to the NE. Ripon is interesting.
Wensleydale railway not far away. Hutton-le-Hole is pretty during the week,
when it's not busy.
Further away, Railway museum at Shildon, there's always Whitby and Scarborough,
to say nothing of the NSA golfballs at Blubberhouses.
Personally, I'd tour the pubs and have a chat with the locals about sheep prices.

As dcb says, not a lot, a pub is a good shout.
If the other half doesn’t mind being dragged around car places you’ve got:
Twisted Automotive in Thirsk (expensive Defenders)
Alexanders Prestige (about 20 mins south near Boroughbridge)
Mathewsons (about 30 mins east at Pickering)
The road to Helmsley is quite fun, nice well sighted roads - though N Yorks police often have a camera on those roads. If the other half doesn’t mind being dragged around car places you’ve got:

Keep below 80 on the A19...
All good suggestions.
If the weather is good, and you are able, then a walk from the top of Sutton Bank is a must.
Rievaulx Abby is not far from Sutton Bank so again I'd visit here as long as its not too wet.
An excellent pub near Thirsk is the Carpenters Arms at Felixkirk. It has rooms too but we've never stayed.
If you don't want to go North to Northallerton or Masham then York, and all it has to offer, is only 45 mins south.
Enjoy.

A tour of Robert Thompson's factory at Kilburn seven miles away, where they make "mouseman" Oak furniture.......Very interesting.

Head towards Pickering, and you've got Flamingoland for rollercoasters etc if thats your thing
stop for a brew at NY500 cafe https://ny500.co.uk/
and a visit to Matthewsons (TV's bangers and cash) https://www.mathewsons.co.uk/
From there carry on the A170 and you end up in Scarborough, or go across the moors to Whitby

There’s a gliding club at the top of Sutton Bank. Just go to watch or buy an experience voucher and take a flight.
Thanks - I knew about the club, I didn't know you could buy a flight...https://www.ygc.co.uk/flight-experiences/first-fli...
Stayed in the Golden Fleece Hotel a few months ago (nice place).
Pretty market town.
That's where the positives end. Nightlife/pubs are horrible. 'Little 3' pub is decent though.
The locals gather to count their 6 fingers, smoke weed in the pub entrances, and basically get paralytic as soon as the pubs open. As an added bonus the Wetherspoons starts serving at 9am. When the races are on it must be chaos.
I wondered why such a lovely small town still managed to hang onto its police station.

Highly recommend here for proper pub grub. https://oldoaktreethirsk.co.uk/ Make sure you book as its normally packed regardless of what day or time you go.
Id suggest heading to Richmond, then follow the road to Reeth and cut across to Aysgarth Falls. Worth going on to Hawes for the Wensleydale Creamery to pick up some cheese. Road from Richmond to Reeth is a cracking drive if your in something fun, and if your not the scenery is brilliant regardless.
