I wonder if we have any PHers that live there?

Long story short, the Covid effect has seen us depart the city centre, where I have happily lived for the last decade. We are weighing up some options.

Ilkley, Burley, Menston, Guiseley all make sense being an easy hop on the train into town. However, it remains to be seen just how many days a week we shall return face to face. I have my own company so in theory never need to go into Leeds unless by choice. The Mrs will need to go to the university albeit it remains unknown how many days a week. Planning for the "worst" it will be back to 4 - 5 days a week as it was pre-Covid. She does drive albeit hasn't ever driven in the UK and isn't the most confident therefore. Add to that parking costs and I think she would prefer public transport. It would also be useful if I wanted a few beers after work on days that I did come to town.

My parents often stay in Pool and I have to say I rather like it. Few nice pubs and seems very idyllic. Harrogate not too far to get to either. I just wonder whether it's an arse if you are commuting and presumably driving is the order of the day as the hour long bus ride doesn't sound ideal before and after a day at work.

Anyone that lives there got any views?

Ideally we would like to be airport side of Leeds as I own a house abroad that we spend 50% of the time so regularly travel (or did!).Property style also factors in the choice as ideally I fancy a 3 storey townhouse style newish build. Low upkeep, small garden, garage etc.

Hi.

I'm in Bramhope so the top of the hill from Pool. I really like it and as you say Pool has what you need. A couple of pubs, a shop, a sports club that's good for a pint on an evening to watch a cricket match etc..

You're a stones throw from Otley if you want a few more beers or cafes etc and shopping in Harrogate if you need more..

The commute to Leeds can be a pain but that depends on your tolerance I guess..

The best bit is it's the last out post before you hit countryside and the dales. There's some great roads to be had as soon as you've filled up with V.Power at the Shell garage. My fave loop is Pool to Fewston via Farnley on B6451 past the Sun Inn. After that at the crossroads head left towards Skipton and then turn off just before Blubberhouses after Fewston reservoir car park onto Shepperd Hill road and then blat back to Otley.

Good luck if you make the move..

Bramhope too and would say pretty much all of the above. Not sure about buses from Pool though. The 84 runs straight through Bramhope into town.

I’m in the type of house you’re looking at but in Burley, 5 minute walk to station and then 20 minute train to Leeds. Good for both commuting and not worrying about having a few beers after work (last train 2330).

Drive time to Leeds similar to Pool as I believe but less of a queue at Dyneley lights.

Pool still a good choice though, as is Bramhope. I wonder if values will be affected by all the new development?

A bit off topic but, did any of you Bramhopians spot the Delorean that was parked at one of the houses on the road between Bramhope and Cookridge a good while ago. He's had a good couple of classics in the past.

No didn't spot that but will keep my eyes peeled.

88 miles per hour was possible down there once upon a time. Not today and probably rightly so but I guess he can travel back if he so desires!

Thanks all for your input here. I must say I am leaning to perhaps sticking to one of the towns along the rail line. As much as I love the idea of Pool, I can't help but think its perhaps a jump too far from city centre living to that rural location where its really best served by driving. Particularly once Covid is a thing of the past, the Mrs is back in to Leeds centre most days and I will have FOMO envy and wanting to head in for a few post-work drinks, I can see the train being a much used mode of transport.

Soxboy, it seems Burley has the selection of property style I am after (and Guiseley but less keen area wise for that village vibe). Only slight fly in the ointment is my ex hailed from Burley and I believe still lives in those parts but we didn't end on too bad a terms so hopefully that doesn't blacklist me.

Many thanks all.

If the train is a clincher which I can well understand then Ilkley is worth a look. Great little town and train into Leeds in no time..Just the right amount of bars, restaurants and shops whilst having the benefit of Ilkley Moor for a ramble, Golf, Lido, Rugby, Cricket etc etc. Still only 15 mins to the airport.

Nice spot but pricey..

Rawdon is a bit more the 'burbs, but has its own well to do feel and the Apperley Bridge Station. Obviously handy for the airport.

What about the Harrogate line? Perhaps Pannal or Weeton?

Nice to see KT Green still supplying some crackers. Used to get my Scoobys from there until we moved overseas. Also once catapulted off the mountain bike whilst tonking down Old Pool Bank on a wet day.... happy days. Good luck!

Thanks again all. Had some further online looking.

Rawdon looks nice but not sure there are many of the type of house I want there. Also, I assume it would be a drive to Appleby Bridge station and then park somewhere?

What is Appleby Bridge itself like within walking distance to the station there?

Haven't ruled out Ilkley but again, few of the property types I am after in that area. I spent a lot of time there with my ex a few years back and all her mates are Ilkley guys and gals. Lovely, lovely place but I did find it a touch cliquey.

Will have a look at Pannal etc now.

In the meantime, have come across an ace looking development in Shadwell area that has thrown a curve ball. Not a complete nightmare for the airport but hardly on the doorstep, and f all rail options! (but a bus route into town).

Can I just say as well, I am amazed by the number of beautiful high end properties in the Rawdon area! I had no idea that was such a hotspot for massive pads!

I grew up and have now moved back to Rawdon (Grew up near the golf course / cragg woods, now near the billings). I class Apperley Bridge station as walking distance, but it does depend on where in Rawdon you end up, and your willingness to walk / cycle to a station.

The area of Apperley Bridge appears to have expanded from when I grew up (or at least the people wishing to claim they live in it has). I think, though I may be wrong that some of the houses that state Apperley Bridge are now BD post codes with the inevitable effect of higher insurance costs to match. I may be talking rubbish here though, so please do your own research.

I'm a massive fan of Rawdon, hence moving back after a few years in Stanningley. The billing and Cragg wood are great for walking the dog, getting out on the bike, and the Chevin / Ilkley Moor aren't far away. Easyish commute into Leeds on the odd occasion I have to go.

There is also Horsforth worth considering with 2 stations.

We're in this area and I have to say it is pretty convenient for access to Leeds, and isn't too far to York either.
Obviously crap for the train, but the 7S bus runs to the city with incredible regularity. However, being this close to town makes a taxi rides pretty cost effective, and you can come and go on your on schedule that way.
The countryside is on your doorstep and motorway access for wider traveling is close by. The airport is around 25 mins away and is a fun ride over via Alwoodley/Adel/Bramhope etc. biggrin

Cross Gates might be an alternative thought, if you prefer more of a town vibe with a train station in this area.

Re Pannal, I grew up on the edge of there and have a few friends and relatives there now. Very good place for bringing up a family but not sure I'd like it if didn't have kids. There's not much of a village centre, only a Co-op as a shop and the only pub is a bit of a trek as the village (including Burn Bridge) is quite spread out. Whilst it is on the Leeds rail line, the trains themselves are horrible and not a patch on those on the Wharfedale line.

How about Menston? On the train line, very handy for the airport, got the village vibe and none of the clique of Ilkley. I agree Ilkley can be very cliquey if you hang around too long with people from there, so I keep away from them!

Also consider something on the Airedale train line, Bingley (where I live, is not as expensive area), Steeton/Silsden and further afield - really rubbish car commute into Leeds, multi bottlenecks though.
I work at Leeds Uni and wont be back in the office until next academic year at the earliest.
