We’re looking for a home in York but Mrs G has seen a lovely property on RightMove in the above village.

We’re pretty knowledgeable about York now but no idea about Baildon so wondered what it’s like?

Thanks, Gary

I live in Baildon, PM me if you want any local specific info.

I moved here in 1993, then moved away to Idle in 1997 as I couldn’t afford a better house in Baildon but could in Idle.

Then as career developed, found myself able to move back here which we did 13 years ago.

Have thought about moving to say Ilkley or Harrogate but TBH baildon gives a great blend of location and value for money.

Biggest drawback is that at peak times it’s a bit busy to get out of as a lot of people cut through the village. We live near the top end (Browgate area) and it is one mile from the roundabout to the traffic lights at the bottom of the hill. It would often take 30 minutes to cover that mile if I left for work at 8 am. (Now retired so no problem!)

Also no direct train link to Leeds should that matter to you.

Many upsides are good Co Op, and other local shops (no decent butcher, or baker or veg shop though) some good take aways, no idea about pubs (there are a few but I don’t drink). Good doctors surgery and everything is walkable. Monthly farmers market.

Very easy access to open countryside with good walks.

So overall I think it’s a great place to live, but PM me if you want specifics on the house/street in question..

Great lived here for 22 years.
Ideal as on doorstep of dales and moors.

Lovely countryside, poor road access/traffic congestion.
If you were originally looking in York, where do you need to get to for work?

I’m retired.

We’d still prefer to find somewhere around York as we love it here even though we’ve only been here four months. Trouble is that there’s not a lot coming on the market and we’ve already been outbid in one at way over asking from a London buyer. So we’re looking at other options and trying to be a little flexible to see if other areas will work.

Ah, ok. That certainly takes the pressure off the commute.
Have you looked around Skipton?
That's where I'd be heading.

I lived in Baildon for 27 years, the top of Baildon is better than the bottom some nice homes and lovely views, however I'd look to go further down the wharfe valley towards Menston, Burley or Ilkley, it gets more expensive but there is a reason for that.

Thanks guys.

After a lot of thinking we've decided to keep looking at York for another 6 months at least before we give-up and change tack. We actually really like Ilkley and Skipton so that's good advice from both of you above.
