Must have been over a thousand geese flying North over Malton earlier this afternoon.

The most birds I can ever recall seeing in one go. All heading Northish. I though they should be heading South?

This was the first wave, out of sight by the time the last lot were overhead.

Still flying north as not yet cold enough to force them south. Usually they are looking for better feeding grounds for the time being and will still have the young birds with them.
Forecast for next week is really warm (20c) so they will likely stay north until some hard frosts hit.

or

They've heard Bernard Matthews (Norfolk) is a bit short of good birds this year.......

Thanks!

I've never seen that many at once, fabulous sight, must have been 5 minutes or more that they were flying overhead.

I've seen groups that big quite often, we live near two large rspb reserves so it's not uncommon. They make an absolute racket as well!

This morning around 200 flew in formation over Batley heading north west. Some lucky farmer will probably find his winter crops decimated in the morning. rolleyes
