Has anyone else noticed there's a new bunch of cameras appearing along the Smart sections of the M62 around the Leeds and Bradford? Several new installations have appeared on poles AFTER some gantries with 2 SPECS-style cameras pointing towards you but they're a new style that I've not seen before and can't find any images of them online. They're much flatter in shape than 'normal' average speed cameras and appear to be grey on grey poles rather than the usual yellow. They've only appeared very recently and weren't there 2 weeks ago. Anyone seen any recent news articles?

For the avoidance of doubt I'm not referring the newish HADECS3 installations with the cameras sat on a tray at the side of the gantry and the 'speed confirmation' cams on a pole 200 yards before them. I'm well aware of those and know where they all are. These are something completely new and are rather strangely positioned just after gantries that don't have a HADECS3 installation on them confused. I do tend to, ahem, push the speed limit quite a bit on the M62 in the sections where there are no cameras so this is a bit concerning and I may have to lift my toe a bit grumpy.

My daughter got caught on the 28th August at 11.45pm at junction 27 (M62) NO gantry signs were lit all in darkness, no speed restrictions in place but, the camera flashed her doing 89 mph !!.... so perhaps all cameras on that stretch of motorway are live all the time.

All cameras are live and tbh the limit is 70 I think they take your pic after 85mph, think it was in the paper a while ago

That'll be one of the HADECS3 gantries for sure if it flashed. They are indeed active even when no temp limit is up but as there's only 3 installations westbound and 2 installations eastbound between J25 and J29 you soon remember where they are if you're a regular along there. So long as you slow down to an indicated 80 or less past them you can do 3 figures for the rest of the motorway sections, although probably not for much longer if these new cameras that I've spotted are average speed ones frown. Has no-one else spotted them then?

So they'll have cameras on the gantries covering all the lanes, then HADECS3 on the gantry legs covering all the lanes and now average speed cameras on top of that?

Beyond a joke.

The cameras on the gantries over each lane were the old HADECS2 ones and they are long gone, replaced by 5 sets of HADECS3 installations for the entire J25-29 section. There are currently only 5 speed cameras between Brighouse and Tingley, but that may be changing depending on what these new ones are that have started to appear. Are there any fresh roadworks planned that would explain them popping up?

They're now showing on streetview.

What are they and what do they do? From my observations over the past 6 months they don't seem to be enforcing speed. Can't find any info on these online. They're sited after nearly every gantry on the M62 Leeds/Bradford section.

I was on the M1 (wakefield section) going south yesterday around 6.30am pretty clear traffic and those cameras were snapping away at people that looked to be doing around 80-85mph indicated, I'm guessing they are the same as the ones on the M62, seems to me that the tolerance allowed has been reduced perhaps.

Although I can't be sure what speed they were doing I was doing around 75mph indicated and they were passing me but not with a great speed differential.

Are those grey ones either
1) the old yellow average speed cameras from the roadworks, painted grey over the yellow, because cheaper than removing them?
2) ANPR cameras

Not 1). They were all freshly installed summer 2018 with new pole installations. No idea if they're ANPR.

Stick to the speed limit not a problem.

Just found out from my man at Highways England : These are ANPR cameras to check for Red X compliance. Currently they are being used to send naughty-naughty letters out prior to the full HADECS3 Red X switch on...

So don't go through Red Xs and you have nothing to worry about

Hope that helps

Aha! Thanks. I did actually suspect that was what they were for. I am pleased to know that I can continue with my relaxed approach to complying with the speed limits along there and only need to slow down a bit for the 3 cams on the w/b side and 2 cams on the e/b side between Lofthouse and Brighouse. hehe

The bit about ALL cameras being set to enforce 70mph on the M1 and M25 you might have seen on social media, is a total lie. Even Highways England have confirmed this. No idea what the safe speed to pass the cameras when no other restrictions are in place though . . I tend to stick to around 75-80 and haven't had a problem

The HADECS3 can be set up to be active full time even when no temporary limit is in force. They certainly are on the motorways in other parts of the country judging from the number of people that have reportedly received a ticket at high 80s+ speeds. So it's probably fair to say that the M62 ones are set up the same although I've not personally heard of anyone getting a ticket. Like you, I'll do max indicated 80 past the handful of HADECS3 gantries just to be safe but I do whatever speed I want for the rest of the section.

Just a question about the cameras on the M62 at the Bradford / Leeds section of the M62.
On Thursday evening about 8.30pm I went through at 78 and for personal reasons visiting an ill relative Hull I went through all the cameras from the one after M621 to the M1 at this speed.
What is the position regarding the penalties will it be regarded as a separate fine for each camera or will it be a formal warning notice, as I have only ever been prosecuted once in the last 43 years as a HGV Class one driver (which incidentally was for a traffic offence in my car) obviously this has no bearing on what I did last Thursday evening.
Anyone got any idea what the police position will be on this issue, is there any leeway on the speed or noise it a set speed of say 72 mph and the FPN is issued irrespectively?

On the M62 Liverpool - Manchester, these seem to be flashing at close to 75mph.

I have cruise set to 72mph through them, just to be safe.

That said, the remainder of the trip is average 50, as it has been for the last year, so there's no chance of building any speed currently.
