Anyone know a good tarmac company, Bradford / Halifax area... who isn't going to sell me heather or ask me if I like dawgs?

I need a drive and parking area doing, and my neighbour will probably get his done at the same time.

Thanks.

Just going through this process at the moment. Got several quotes for tarmac. Ranging from £3,000 to £5,500.
Have now decided to go for concrete instead as I do a lot of work on my cars and the trolley jack will destroy tarmac as will spilled oils and fluids. rolleyes
If you don't get any recommendations, try Checkatrade for a local company with reviews.

Mel Green Construction have been going years.

They used to subcontract to McHales in Bradford.

McHales had lots of Council contracts.

Hope they are still that good

Thanks, both useful replies. Checkatrade has shown a couple of likely ones, and Mel Green aren't too far away either so I'd best start ringing round.

Let the thread know if you get a good one as I'm after a new driveway as well, but don't know where to start.

My parents had a company called MC Driveways ( http://www.mcdriveway.co/home ) block pave their driveway. We're in Cookridge but they might cover your area. They've done bloody loads of driveways over here, easily doing 2 a week in Cookridge/Horsforth. This took them 2 days and I think it cost £7k.

Changed my mind and have gone for block paving. The company is coming next Thursday, 27/7, so once its done I'll post pics and let you know.

2 days? Did that include excavating and building a good base layer? I'm always worried about sinking...

Yep, they turned up at 8am and the boss was already inside his digger and had ripped up the old tarmac by late lunch with his 5/6 lads. There was a mound of earth outside the house which took 2 grab hire trucks to remove it all. Their compactor was a great big roller type thing which they compacted a good 8" of hardcore down.

The next day they had the main block layer lad round. I've never seen blocks laid so fast, the 4 lads were flat out trying to keep him supplied with blocks as he was that fast. They were loaded up and finished by 7-8pm

Brighouse Driveways are another reputable company, their work is first class and they are a reliable friendly bunch.

This is not going well. After agreeing the price and calling company to arrange a date they said they would call back around 5.30pm. No call. More than a week later and call from them saying they could start on the 27th July. Meant to call sooner blah blah blah. Excellent news so did a lot of preparatory work all ready for them including lifting and removing 20 concrete slabs.
Expected a call prior to them turning up just to confirm all was good. No call. Anyway today arrives and no sign of them. Gave them till 10am (builders local time) and no show. Other half tackles them and we're coming Monday now. So why no call then? Sorry blah blah blah. Kicked them into touch.

Have now arranged for one of the other companies who quoted to do the work. Don't hold your breath if waiting for a recommendation. rolleyes

My saga with a driveway continues. After giving the unreliable block paving company the boot, I arranged for a local company to lay concrete. Lots of communication and always turned up as promised. Price agreed and start date.
So, off we went to get married and left them to it. Big mistake. No show on the Monday. Tuesday removed old tarmac and started to prepare the drainage channels. Wednesday just one man for 4 hours. Thursday again just one man setting everything up. Friday 9am a team of 7!!! Then realised they weren't pumping the concrete but using barrows. 10.50am and all done. One man remained cleaning up and also returned twice on the Saturday.
Came home Sunday morning to really poor quality work. They'd brushed the concrete while it was soaking wet causing ridges and grooves instead of waiting until it had gone off a bit. The arrangement was to lay the stuff over 2 days to prevent this so they rushed it. The main drainage channel runs uphill!!! So permanently full of water. Some channel grate sits on concrete and not in the channel. Channel blocked with debris etc etc.
Owner of the company called and disagrees with zillions of excuses. Looks like a battle ahead argue

Sorry to hear that.

I contacted two local guys. Only one replied. He came next day. Really good bloke. Stayed about an hour, took loads of measurements and notes.
Haven't heard anything in three weeks. rolleyes

I've now got another number to try for someone else...

Yep, it seems they're all good at the chat up to get the business then they just fade away. Neighbours and family have all been for a look at the nice new drive. As this is a family forum, I can't post their comments here. shoot
CCTV shows the laying gang in their bestest Adidas trackies, puffing on fags clearly enjoying their work. So they laid a 15 metre x 4 metre driveway in 1 hour 45 minutes using barrows, not a pump, from the mixer wagon.
The nice fine 1 mm brush marks obviously applied just as the concrete starts to go off using the correct brush......censoredbangheadirkedranting
