Just a heads up that the B1257 will be closed from 22/04/16 for 2 weeks between Chop Gate and Fangdale Beck.

Bit of a nuisance as its my daily commute and a great road to drive/ride (depending if I am taking out the Lotus or Harley) for pleasure when not going to work.

Bugger - I was going to be on a group rideout up that road on Saturday.

Is there a link to the information about the closure anywhere?

NYCC Roadworks map of the area around Helmsley:

If you drag the map down a bit you should see road up to Chop Gate.

Guess I will just have to set off now and drive down Blakey Ridge. Not a bad second choice and commute to work. Next week, I might just do Osmotherly to Hawnby. At least we have plenty of good roads.

If we were going up the B1257 from Helmsley to Stokesley, can you recommend a diversion to avoid the closed section?

Something interesting would be nice, as we'll be on motorbikes wink

Currently aslong as you take it steady through the 'closed section' then driving the route after 7:30pm and before 8:00am should be ok for your commute.
The work being done currently is all on the edge of the road with cones to mark when the workmen have finished for the day.

The above may change, I drove it last night and again this morning.

I would seek an alternative route for daytime hours.

Just a heads up that the road is now open again after the work went on for longer than planned.

Praise be! Fresh and tacky tarmac anyone?

Well it's definitely NOT FRESH TARMAC. Every bit as pocked as ever on the run down from Great Ayton.

They have made a real mess of 'patching' the road. No doubt they will close it again so they can repaint the missing white road markings.

For me and my 'little clio' I found the repair work to be a great improvement.

The rural roads I typically drive are far worse with deep pot holes preventing any enthusiastic flow.

Im looking forward to completion biggrin

Ah well , the poor sods who live within earshot of the road will now have to endure the minority of bikers who think it's cool to have exhausts you can hear 3 miles away and think that any other road users are just an encumbrance to their God given right to ride like tts . As I say, it's a minority , most bikers are just fine (some of my best friends etc ) but some really shouldn't be allowed out.

I wonder if, now they have finished that road, they could consider the route from Chop Gate to the top of Carlton Bank. It's the worst road in the area. Potholes, edges fallen away, general disintegration!
