Number of Speed camera vans in N.Yorks to double
Discussion
On the upside - spring is around the corner, good time to slow down and take in the stunning Yorkshire views.
Seriously now... I remember some years ago on Top Gear, a government official stated all the speed camera's in the UK had to be signposted. Is this no longer the case?
Hearing it was a revelation to me back then, living in a country where most cameras were thoroughly hidden and practically served as ATM's for the authorities. It was actually one of the (many) reasons I wanted to come live here. If I find out they started hiding them in the UK as well, I'll be very disappointed.

If that's the case, they've been nabbing a lot of people slightly over the limit and milking the speed awareness courses. They don't keep any of the fixed penalty £100 fines.
You might be right. If you look at the website and download the data you can see exactly where what speed and the outcome!
They're very sneaky, I do the a64 run daily so get used to the locations but they're hiding them abit more now! There was one the other day parked at ganton at dusk with his camera poking out there was another one parked at staxton roundabout where the shell garage was in the blocked up entrance they've also been at Sherburn (just after malton not Sherburn in Elmet) and near Eden camp!
Having looked into it a bit further, I recon the sneakiness factor might be down to the district police branch and possibly the local council. In the case of Wakefield, for instance, their changing locations are regularly updated in the local newspaper:

The other possibility is people just don't do their homework, and then get surprised... But that's not something a PH member would ever do, right?

You can do your homework to see where they are, but the road list covers pretty much everywhere! Unless they've started to tell you where they are on the day and I don't know about it?
Thing to do is don't speed, which I'm fine with tbh 50-60 is fine on an open road.. My problem is overtaking the 40mph crew, it's too easy to get up to high speeds to get round them.

Vans are a nightmare. I am on 9 points at the moment (6 from the vans) and spend more time looking at the speedo than the road.
I added up the income from fines for 3 vans for one week based on the figures published online and just based on £90 fixed penalty it came to £27000. That's why they have gone for 3 more.
Last week there was one on the A684 going south towards Northallerton hidden in the trees on the upslope after a long downhill stretch. Thankfully I was alerted by cars coming the other way. First time I have seen it there.
My main objection is that many are sited where they are most likely to receive income not where there has been a history of accidents. The one that nabbed me and the Mrs is sited again at the bottom of a downslope on the A170 heading west from Helmsley to Thirsk. Locals probably know to slow down there but people passing through will get nabbed every time. So theoretically the camera has done its job - the locals slow down. But they keep putting a camera there because they can make money from it.

I was following a horse transporter along there last summer, we were both doing around 60 as he was taking advantage of the gradient when all of a sudden he locked up and 20 tonnes of horse transporter slewed sideways into the opposite lane. Guess what he'd spotted hiding behind a bush...If that's an accident blackspot, it's because they hide the vans and people slam on when they seem them on an otherwise safe road.
