M1 southbound at junction 40 (Wakefield/Dewsbury).

The new smart motorway is up and running and I've seen the speed cameras flash a lot of cars here even with the smart signs not lit. Am I right in thinking they flash because they detect an overspeed but you are not prosecuted unless the smart signs are lit? Quick to say I have not been flashed as yet.

They have been up and running for a couple of weeks now, I have seen them flash quite a few times already and I think the camera's are set very close to the 70mph limit

Must be near to 70 mph as the cars passing me dont seem to be going that quick? Better safe than sorry then.

Set it to 70mph on the cruise control and just watch the skies light up when other motorists go through at 77mph.

The whole thing is getting beyond a joke speed limits set 50 bloody years ago at a time when the bench mark car was a ratty dangerous Ford Anglia that wouldn't even be allowed to be sold these days, these utter speed communists that are in control are ruining the road network.

Spending hundreds of millions on schemes that do not work but only serve to relieve the public of even more money once they're finished.

The m62 is a classic example nose to tail traffic before and after...nothing has changed nothing! Apart from the fact that you have one more thing to worry about.

Don't get me started on speed bumps, ridiculous amounts of un-necessary luminous road furniture and the policy of turning perfectly good straight roads into obstacle courses where you have to weave in and out just to drive down a straight road (Eldwick high street as an example) and the 20 is plenty brigade.

And relax.

The m62 is a complete joke!!! Ever since the so called smart motorway has been introduced its made it ten times worse. The traffic is horrendous as you will be driving along nice and steadily and then for no reason it flashes up 50 and everyone slams the breaks on which causes major traffic. I use the m62 everyday and travel on it at 5am every morning and the amount of times its flashing 50mph is ridiculous I mean there are literally 20 cars on the road and they reduce the speed limit!!!! Why???

Agree on every single point and now we have some idiot who wants to have roads with no white lines !

That idea (if you can term it as such) beggars belief!

I was told on my Speed Awareness Course that they measure the gap between vehicles with induction loops in the road, if traffic is bunching up, the limit will automatically lower, it can also be over-ridden by Highways though....

To be honest, since they finished the M62 and started the M1 roadworks, followed by getting caught (hence attending the course), I've just abandoned the motorways and taken to the back roads & over the last year I've noticed a dramatic increase in traffic on said back roads, presumably doing the same!!

I've decided it's not worth the risk after the debacle with the M62 cameras and WYP refusing to confirm if you would still be prosecuted if you were flashed despite the screens being off.

As for flashing cameras I posted in speed plod and law, in the last 2 week I was driving on the m1 southbound and as I went passed the camera at junction 40 it flashed! Now the matrix boards weren't lit and I was on cruise at 65mph so 5mph under the limit! No idea why it flashed and I haven't heard anything yet

Up until last week I used to pass through Eldwick on a daily basis, and as you say, the constant weaving is just a joke, and as for those junctions which are pushed out into the road...

And then you have the 20 limit and speed bumps through Gilstead, which I'm fine with as some of them run past a school, but all the way down and around the bend? Madness.

HADECS2 ones (above the lanes) From Brighouse to Lofthouse are safe to go under at any speed if there's no limit being displayed on them. I can tell you this with 100% certainty wink. Don't know about the new HADECS3 ones yet. Allegedly some people have been caught over 70 by the HADECS3 ones on the M25 when no speed has been displayed but it might just be pub talk. I'd have expected to have seen a fair bit of evidence of this by now if it were true, given how so many people do 80+ on the motorways so I remain sceptical and make sure my speed is under 75 going past the new ones on the M62 and M1 til more is known.

Regarding the speed limit on the westbound M62 through the night, this is set for the roadworks on the Chain Bar slip road but they start reducing the speed at the first gantry after Gildersome. There's no need for it at all, especially as it's only the hard shoulder that's coned off - hardly a reason to reduce the speed limit to 40mph across all 3 lanes 3 miles from the fking junction. A simple red X over the hard shoulder and CAUTION - ROADWORKS ON SLIP ROAD on the matrix board would suffice. rolleyes

Indeed but they are silly sized, Hawksworth is now a 20 zone and a few years ago they put Hollins hill from a NSL (which it had been for 40 odd years) to 50mph and is now a faintly ridiculous 40mph you can break that on a push bike going down it, in fact its put cars and bikes into conflict going down it.

And ironically, from the Guiseley side - the entrance to Hawksworth has a nice fresh* "30" painted in the road. I think somebody slipped up there...

And the amount of people who have clearly not noticed it's now a 20 (or simply don't care) is amazing, judging by the amount of times I was hounded through there (even though I was doing <gasp> 25 [indicated]).

  • It looks recent anyway.

After witnessing many cars getting flashed on the M1 a few weeks ago I haven't seen them flash once for the past couple of weeks and I've witnessed cars go through them at 85mph plus.

Maybe they were just testing them, does anybody know anyone who has actually been done?
