17? that's a bit late in life to be starting to drive
Young drivers start at around 11. (I took my lad to a session at Makro in leeds, pretty impressed with the set up, excellent to get him started without testing my patience or wearing our cars out.)
There's the airfield at Tockwith from 12 years with their instructors, at 14 you can accompany kids in your own car. Not the best surface in some places but not too bad at £20 for 1.5 hours in your own car.
