Bad news for Tadcaster, now permanently cut in two as the main bridge that was already closed has in fact partially collapsed....

It's a hell of a trek from one side of Tadcaster to the other. You have to go almost to York to do it.

Another reason why they need to add full slip-roadage to the east/west entries on the Western end of Tadcaster.

The entire 'event' in Yorkshire is just another example of the lack of investment in infrastructure for countless decades. All the best stuff was built 50+ years ago and then we complain when it fails under modern and unforseen loads.

Only ever been through Tadcaster a couple of times, so I can't really comment on the need for a bypass. However, it was a sad sight to see a historic bridge colapse and I feel sorry for the residents who have been effected by the severe weather; indeed everyone who has been hit by the flooding.

Yeah it's pretty sad to see this at Christmas too. You plan for a week of rest and destressing and end up with these unimaginable events in your home!

It makes you wonder if the gas pipe/digging related elements helped weaken that part of the bridge?!

As for the bypass, well the A64 dual carriageway is the by-pass/bridge combo any small town could wish for! But oddly there is no way to access both directions onto the A64 from both ends of the town. So you can depart from Tadcaster East from the East end, and West from the West end, but not the opposing directions. Bit weird really.

What it needs is a Bailey bridge installing to at least allow foot traffic and reinstate some of the essential services.

Quickest way now would be via Boston Spa/Walton

This; a squad of sappers and a few pallets of bridging gear should have that crossable at least by foot in a few hours.

Agree about the Bailey bridge.

The slip road issue has something to do with a wealthy land owner, nearby, I believe!

It needs an MGB, not Bailey, that way you could over bridge the two fallen spans and take pretty much anything over it.

The issue would then be how to get a crew in to repair it as I'm not sure there's the space either side to put in an alternate cruising point in the middle of town.

To be fair it's probably best to explain that one more simply, I'm a structural engineer and even my first thought was how an old sports car was going to help.biggrin.

Expect they do need to bring in the Sappers though, they would have it sorted before the construction industry had done a risk assessment.

Boston isn't shut is it?, I believe Linton is but that's irellevent to Tad.

Hmmmmm, CPO it?

It's still needed to be upgraded, and if he hasn't done anything else with it for what, 35+ years that I've know the junctions there in that state, then tough titty?

Bit of a shame a local person is holding back Tadcaster's infrastructure for no good raisin.

It's an ongoing negotiations, among brewery, SDC and town council.
All want the best but in different ways!
It's a frustrating affair.

Not all the empty houses and shops are down to the Feudal lord, just most of them.mad

The viaduct is usable by foot and pedal bike.

There are ways and means of avoiding the trip up to Bilbrough top for the Tad easties who want to travel west towards Leeds on the A64. Head into town, left at the traffic lights and left at Oxton, takes you to the westbound A64, make sure you've got something lively though as the on slip is virtually non existent since it was "improved".

A shuttle bus has already been set up and Sainsburys are offering free click and collect on shopping from their car park, formerly the "temporary live fish store"

The Tad gram school buses have been re routed.

I took a look down yesterday and the way they are going at it, the supermarket was already gutted they will have it up and running soon, not sure I can say the same for the bridge while the various experts do their spurting.

Their is a load of sand and soil built that has built up over the years under some of the normally dry bridge spans, so when the level rises all the water still has to force its way through the main spans.

Oh and some expert thought it was a good idea to put some groynes in the river about half a mile downstream from the bridge a few years ago.

The bridge has been on borrowed time since there was a problem three or four years ago and it was closed for a while, rather than some preventative work in broken Britain the authorities prefer to do nowt until they have to.

and don't get me started on why all three Tadcaster Junctions on the A64 don't allow you to leave and join the A64 in both directions, another few quid saved that at best has proved to be short sighted on so many occasions when there are problems on the A64.banghead
