Anyone use the M18 regularly as a commute? Been offered a job in Selby so just wondering how stressful the commute is from Sheffield. Google says 48min.

Delays in the morning? Traffic? etc. etc.

I used it a bit four years ago. The M1 through Sheffield can be a pain, but you'll avoid most of that I assume. Where the M18 starts can also be bad, but avoid the A1 what ever you do, a real awful road in rush-hour.

I'd be tempted to try and A19.

I'll be on the parkway to the M1 then M18, or so I was hoping. i'll have a look at the A19

As pervious said - traffic hotspots are:

Parkway heading toward M1
M1 is usually slow but moving
Start of the M18
The Parkway -> M1 slip has traffic lights on, which are sometimes working when the M1 is fairly clear.

Where would you pickup the A19?
York road in Donny can be a nightmare in the mornings.

No idea about the A19, had a look on google maps but it looks like I would have to go through all the traffic hotspots you listed to get to it.

Might do a test run!

Could go north-wards on the M1, then M62 but no idea what the roads would like.

Thats not a bad shout actually. The M62 east of the M1 isn't that bad on a morning, and then again pick up the A19. You've also got the choice of running up the A1 to the A63 if there's an issue with the A19.

M1 to J1 on the M18 is often heavy, normally worse towards the M1 though. J2 for the A1 gets crap eastbound in the evenings most nights. Other than that I can't tell you much as I only travel between J1 & J3 on the M18 currently.

PS. if you see an old '93 Jag then it's probably me smile

Parkway > M1 > M18 > M62 > J36 > Drax > Selby. You'll get some traffic out of Sheffield to the M18 but should be a clear run rest of the way. Forget the A19, you won't get above 40mph. Forget the A1, you won't get above 50 due to all the trucks overtaking each other and volume of traffic. Forget the M1 north, it's miles out of your way as it runs NW rather than N and the roadworks from Durkar to Lofthouse clog up quite bad in the morning rush hour from 0730.

By the way the 24hr garage as you turn left at M62 J36 does some mean home baked food. I highly recommend the large meat pasties. Well worth stopping there on your way to work to pick up your lunch. yes

I used to do it the other way around, also consider M1/M18/A1/A63 or M1/M18/A1/M62/A19 or M1/M18 as suggested, I always alternated based on the mornings traffic reports!

M18 is usually really quite empty for a motorway, A1 would be shorter but busier!

I use the M18 from the M180 to the Rotherham turning, so the opposite way to you, but it's never really that busy - Problems are lorries overtaking other lorries, that's a bottleneck. From the M180 to the M62, however, is a clear run - I've never seen queueing traffic in 6 years that way (that's not to say there never is, I've just never encountered it).

I go M180, M18 and then onto the M62 west every day. I have never had issues on the M18. Always seems to flow well in both directions. Only issue has been road works.

Maybe you'll know - What are they doing on the M180/M18 roundabout? I've guessed at widening it but can't find anything clear on that...

I have been trying to work this out too! They cleared all the trees, and there is a sort of spiral ramp going up from the centre, towards the services. But - theres already a pretty easy and obvious route go from M18 South, to the services... baffling.

Where the m180 meets the roundabout is now only 1 Lane for northbound m18, they are making it two lanes. Should make it quicker at rush hour.
Hope that makes sense.
