lake district run, december '10
Discussion
well after a fantastic time with our scottish friends on the scottish borders run i mentioned on that thread that we have some great roads down our way.
being a local lad i tend not to take the car into the lake district due to the traffic but between november & march it does tend to thin out to the extent that you can even enjoy most of the more famous passes.
so, i was thinking of the first sunday in december (sunday the 5th of december).
starting place would be as close to the m6 as possible & the route would be a loop that will take us through the lake district & back to the m6 for easy access for everyone, usual format, morning drive, lunch at a reasonable place with a big car park then final run to be finished in the afternoon.
i have a basic route in mind so i'm just putting it out there to see if anyone would be interested.

Sounds interesting, send me some more details and I'll pass the word.. I organise a monthly meet at Preston so will mention it to the other drivers and also post this on a super car driving site I am a member of.
I can recommend the Kirkstone Inn as a good stopping point (maybe for a stretch of legs as opposed to lunch)

Have fun, but I won't be able to make it due to my wife's birthday that day (I've used up all of my brownie points). If you want to make a weekend of it, the Grizedale stages are over the same weekend (Fri & Sat) http://www.grizedalestages.co.uk/ of which I'll be there on Saturday.

nice one mate I was hoping this would attract the eye of the Preston meet boys, hence the m6 start & finish point. I'll get in touch via email regarding the basic idea of the route as & when we get a few more people interested.I can recommend the Kirkstone Inn as a good stopping point (maybe for a stretch of legs as opposed to lunch)
Also seeing as the route isn't written in stone just yet how do people feel about what type of roads we do?
I'm trying to combine some fast open sections with the inevitable tight & twisties that are the famous passes.
If you have any particular roads then please feel free to email me them rather than posting them up on here.
Cheers guys!

what would people say to the starting place being changed to the hartside cafe? most of you must know where it is already? nice big car park out of the way but most importantly a truely awesome road leading from it towards the lakes :P wud be weather permitting i guess tho with it being december, wudnt fancy hartside pass with snow/ice on the ground n i dont even have a 911!
I think flexibility is the main key to getting more folk involved.
Rather than having just one meeting point and one ending point how about devising route with say up to 4 main stop off points where people can join or leave, so long as these are well known / easy to find points it might very well encourage a few more to join in.
Also it would be best to avoid any convoy's as such and organise small groups that leave at 5 minute intervals from the start, it just avoids any unwanted attention and hassle.
Of course meeting points can be used to gather en-mass, however convoys are not allowed under law without permission etc.
Another idea is to have manageable sized groups and have 3 different routes between points, thus allowing for more people to see the cars around the lakes and it might be a nice sight seeing cars arriving at meeting points from various directions.
Anyway just some ideas that might put a bit of a spin on the usual A-B straight run.
I have another idea but will discuss this directly with Craig ;-)

Thanks for the emails guys all ideas much appreciated.
As Ive said in the pm's I agree that groups of 5-10 cars will have to be done to avoid A too much attention & B one boring snake of traffic!
Hartside etc is an amazing road but I'm thinking it's been done a million times, the route I'm thinking of will take us directly through the lakes which admittedly will be narrower & twistier with more chance of meeting traffic but is something a little different.
After a lunch break the second part is more fast & flowing but we get both types of road, a decent place to meet mid run & a route that takes us through the heart of the lake district, something I think we might as well take advantage of while the roads are quieter during the winter months.
As for the weather I think unless we had major bad snow (unlikely up here in early December but not impossible!) there's only one part of the route that will be impassable, & that has an easy diversion.
