I want to enjoy the Mini when I get it back tomorrow so where should I go?

I still haven't driven Snake Pass or the Cat and Fiddle (although I have been driven by someone else on them) - are either of them still worth it? I'd be looking to be out for two to three hours.

Watch out for plod and unmarked vans on the Snake.

Cat and Fiddle has average speed cameras, hasn't it..?

I've heard about both, which is why I'm wondering if they're still worth doing.

Forgot to say in my original post I'm based in Chorlton in south Manc.

Snake pass is just another busy a-road. If you get a clear run you will be lucky, unless you get on it early ... really early!

If i were you, id be heading across the border, especially if you have 3 hours. You'll be on some of the best roads in the country within an hour

Used to live in Chorlton, fantastic place to get drunk every night!

I always used to love heading out to Macclesfield then doing the Cat and Fiddle to Buxton, turn left to Whaley Bridge and head back to Macc.

Cat and Fiddle has average speed cameras, but take it slow on the straight bits and just hammer the corners and you'll be fine. IIRC they are set to 50mph, which is a pretty tricky average speed to maintain with all those tight corners.

I have heard from good authority that the A54 between Buxton and Congleton is a better road than the C&F road. It is a lot quieter and just as twisty, but it is NSL and there are no speed cameras. I haven't done it, but i know a few that have. You also don't get the power rangers overtaking you at north of 100mph.

I preferred the A54 over the Cat too - quieter and at least as good a drive. It's been a 50 limit for a while and the SPECs cameras on the Cat extend onto that end of it now too though.

C&F isn't dead - it just needs a little care not to exceed the average speed.

Best to reccy it yourself for peace of mind but you can stop to admire the view from the pub smile

Otherwise I'd say go south of Buxton and have an explore of the roads between there and Bakewell/Chatsworth

The A roads will be choked with holidaymakers so pick your times carefully and take to the backroads whenever possible. Just go for an explore and take a road atlas.

For a shorter run I like going through Greenfield (A635) towards Holmfirth and turning off to Meltham then Marsden to come back via Diggle. It's not a long drive but there's a lot of challenging gradients and some intense combination of corners.

Again it's worth going for an explore of the areas back roads to see what you can find.
