I was wondering if people could offer me a little advice on where to, where to avoid, when looking at buying in Bury?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Really need a bit more info, what kind of house, terraced?,semi?,detatched? budget, etc, and are you set on Bury, or prepared to live a few miles outside?

We are looking at detached or semi, within walking/cycling/scooter/bus distance of the metrolink or train station. I really don't mind if its just out of Bury, some of the rural areas seem very nice indeed.

Budget is between £250k-£350k and we'd prefer a smaller house in a nice area rather than a large house in a rough area.

Well I've lived, in the area over 35 years, so know it fairly well.

If you like open countryside, I would suggest Rossendale, only 10 miles North, linked by the M66, an easy 10 minute trip by car, or there is a half hourly bus service, direct to Bury bus interchange from Rawtenstall.

House prices are sensible, you should be able to get quite a nice house for that kind of money.

Two of the best local agents:-

Other nice areas roundabout, Affetside, Birtle, Bamford, Tottington....

Like most towns, Bury has it's bad points, and fair share of chavs, but overall there are plenty of worst places around.

I know Rossendale reasonably well. A friend of the family lived up there, Judge Duerdon (sp?). I also used to play in the Bolton football leagues back as a teen and we used to visit a few small towns dotted around that area, Waterfoot, Radcliffe and Breightmet.

We have been looking around the Sale, Timperley and Chorlton areas recently, all of which seem on the expensive side, someone suggested Bury and I thought I'd check it out. Many thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them with interest.

Great view by the way thumbup

Unsworth is one of the places I'm interested in, location wise it seems just right. Kudos on the market, its great.

Can't beat a never ending supply of black puddings.

Unsworth aint bad, I live on the main rd Parr lane though, would recommend not living on a main road.

I'd start looking at Ramsbottom and then looking straight up the valley from there. I'd be tempted to avoid East of Rawtenstall if only for the hassle of "one way out" commuting.

I agree, Waterfoot is probably the furthest east you should look, if easy access to the M66 is required. I have lived on both sides of Waterfoot, and a couple of agents have told me houses are defnitely harder to sell on the Bacup side, mainly for this reason.

Its worth a look.

The area I'm going to concentrate on is West of the M66 and as east as Ainsworth. South to the M60 and north up to Ramsbottom. Plenty to go at.

I'd avoid Rammy if I were you, too crowded now.Start looking about about a mile up the road in Edenfield, I've lived there for over 20 years. It's close enough to everything when you need them but far enough away to forget they are there. After that further up the valley, Helmshore but not Haslingden, Crawshawbooth is OK, Rawtenstall, Water, Waterfoot and cowpe are worth a look.Bacup is an odd place, some great houses in some really crap places(and you'll have to learn to play a banjo)

If you are considering somewhere less rural, then Prestwich could be an option, we've got our own metrolink station, and heaton park, and its generally a very green area. Some lovely houses, e.g. guest road, and an excellent chippy or two. Best chinese takeaway ever also.

Less rural isn't high on my list. Just an option, as a dog walker. We live in Worsley now and there are some good walks around Middlewood and along the canal. Something similar would be perfect. Any suggestions would be ideal. Prestiwch is one I'll look into. As mentioned we've already looked at Sale, Timperley and Chorlton. Bury seems like a nice mix, edge of Manchester and nice mix of urban and rural areas.
