Hi there,
I’m posting on behalf of my friend as he doesn’t have access to a computer atm.

Here goes....

He’s looking to open a fish and chip shop in or around the Manchester area, he’s extremely passionate about food in general and having worked in various food outlets/ takeaways he’s going to take the next step and open his own.

After his initial re-search he’s decided on traditional fish & chips over a kebab house as from his initial research town in and across Manchester saw tons of kebab/pizza shops. Futhermore he has a EXCELLENT recipe.

I’ve recommended a few area’s like Cholton/ followfield (area’s i know) but as I live on the out skirts of Manchester i’m not really much help to him hence the post.
I was hoping if you boys and girls could suggest “potential” areas, as much as he would like city centre the cost out weighs his budget but using 7-10K rent a year is a good base. Only other information i can provide is he “would” like to be close to either pubs, schools, offices etc....opening hours are 11am-11pm.

Many thanks in advance for all your help

Cant help with suggesting an area, but there are some damn good chippys already in city centre, particularly Lloyds Chippy near the Town Hall.

I think there is a new one at the Printworks just opened too, so I'd agree with his suggestion of looking further afield than city centre.

He will also HAVE to do gravy. I have noticed that since coming to coventry from cheshire to uni you just can't get chips and gravy, its very annoying.

I find it the other way round. Anywhere south of Manchester seems to think gravy = curry sauce.

Here in Bolton, Friday night mainly takes place on Bradshawgate. All the bars and clubs are at one end, and all the takeaways are at the other. And every single one of them is a kebab shop. There is a chippy at the other end but I don't think it opens very late. A good fish & chip shop at the takeaway end of Bradshawgate might do very well, there are quite a few empty units in that area which they seem to be struggling to fill, so rent might be quite reasonable too.

If he wants to make decent money, student areas would be as good as city centre. Fallowfield and Withington already have The Battered Cod, not sure about Chorlton. Victoria Park may 'need' a good chippy - not seen one round there.
Might be worth a look at Rusholme (already one on Great Western St I think), but I'm guessing rent would be ridiculous within 1/4 mile of Wilmslow Rd.
Quality is everything - if he can get that right, he's cracked it.

If he's extremely passionate about food, why the hell does he want to open a chippy? Or do you mean he's a fat bd! biggrin

in berkhamsted we had a chippy. it had a monopoly. the food was terrible , the staff miserable. new one opens in the town and it is busy as feck. they change their oil on a regular basis and use decent potatoes.
they are really busy despite only having being open a few weeks.
as an earlier poster said , quality food. try not to sell everything under the sun, keep it simple and good
