Me and the other half are currently looking at moving from Worsley to Chorlton, closer to work etc and hopefully less of a traffic headache.

We are looking at the Elan Homes development on the corner of Derwent Avenue and Darley Avenue, just off Princess Road/Barlow Moor Road.

I've no idea about the area, and its advantages or disadvantages. Does anyone have any knowledge of the surrounding area and it's pro's and con's?

I grew up in Chorlton, you don't really want to be living near Darley Ave to be fair.

Proper Chorlton is what is now apparently called Chorlton Green, a name given it would appear, to hike the prices further. My folks still live on Crossland road and my wifes live off Ivygreen road.

Chorlton was a great place when we were growing up, Beech road was a community, it had all the shops you needed and great pubs full of local characters, I could never get in trouble because my folks would know about it before I got home!! But we were safe as kids because all the parents would be watching out for us all.

Now it has been made 'Bohemian' which would appear to mean ripping the heart out of the community and replacing all the shops with wine bars and resteraunts, turning the kids pub into a wine bar and there seems to be a real threat of the Beech closing (one of the last real pubs in the area)

However.... Anywhere off the Green is nice, as said no lack of choice for eating etc, a short walk down to the Ees (what we called the meadows) and you can stroll across meadows and nature reserves over to Sale waterpark and the Mersey, it is a wonderful place in the Summer.

Prices are way up compared to Stretford etc but you can still see the village of old if you look and it is full of history, a great place to live that was wonderful but if you never saw how great it was you won't miss it now!

Most old Chorltonians cashed in when the wine bars turned up and headed out to Urmston for the better public transport links and cheaper council tax LOL< ironic it is that the metro is going to Chorlton soon...!

Good luck with your house hunting, need anymore questions answered, ask away!

Edit to add, look on Google maps, type in Derwent Ave Chorlton, got it? now look slightly south, see Mersey Bank Ave and the estate it is tied to? that is really a no go area to be honest, so tread carefully, what 'we' call Chorlton is if you follow Barlow Moor road past the cemetery and past Chorlton park, on the left you will see Beech Road, that my freind is the village, have a looksie around there, the bottom of Beech road is Chorlton green the heart of the original community from waaaaay back when.

Again, best of luck.

This is why I love Pistonheads. You have taken time out to give me inside, detailed information of the area. I'm very greateful thankyou.

Just a little bit more information about exactly where the property is:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

Google Streetview of the actual houses:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&a...

I am going for a look around the show home, actual house on Friday afternoon so I will take time out to check out the area and The Green as well as the shops, resturants, wine bars and the council estate.

Our initial worry is that being dog owners the area is maybe too urban for good walks without a good few mile walk to the water parks.

The other areas we have considered are Sale and Timperley, both of which seem to be a lot cheaper to buy property and have better transport links (at the moment) into Manchester.

It's my pleasure. I loved growing up in Chorlton and I do still really like it to be honest, to me it is just a shame that the wine bars moved in etc but we did that bit!

For your doggie, from where you are looking it is a short walk to Chorlton water park (look on the south side of Darley Ave) and from there you can stroll all the way to Sale on the banks of the mersey, it is very nice, also, if you follow the Mersey west you will see a pub called Jackson's Boat, that is a fab place for a summer eve drink!

To the other reply, Cosgrove Hall was a great place to visit, got some cells from them and remember looking over the wall into the windows and seeing various characters looking back at me! Did you ever go to the Italian opposite that was wall to wall with Cosgrove cells and other art?

If its any consolation, some of the staff set up by themselves in Altrincham and are still producing great animation smile

Sorry, but I wouldn't go for that.
Everything backing onto that development is ex local authority - go around the back towards the west to see what I mean.
Less than 100m to Princess Parkway too.
If you like walking, that's good - people get dragged out of their cars regularly at that set of traffic lights.
You need to get closer to Chorlton itsself, and to be honest it's a bit overrated - price-wise your other suggestions might offer a better price vs lifestyle compromise.
eta - stuff like this (but sold unfortunately) or this (not actually Didsbury!) might be better located.

I live in Chorlton (I'll look out for your car) and have done for 16 years. Like the first reply said, it's full of wine bars and liberals.

That development you're looking at isn't really in Chorlton and, like others have said, I'd avoid it. If you want good value, look at Whalley Range. If you want somewhere to walk the dog, go for somewhere closer to the centre of Chorlton (with access to the water park and the meadows) or Sale. 'Proper' Chorlton is really expensive, unless you buy an ex-council house on the Mersey Bank estate, which I guess you won't.

Well after looking around on Friday afternoon I can safely say neither of us are interested. The houses are ok, nothing special. The area seems ok too, right on the edge of Princess Parkway, you can actually see it from some of the development but it's remarkably quiet considering its proximety.

The thing that puts us off most is the garden size and that we are looking for somewhere to settle and raise a family, something I struggled to image when we were there.

Sale on the other hand, seems exactly what we are looking for, Norris Rd and Alcester Rd in particular. Plus the Ducati garage isn't too far away.

I live in South Manchester. I deff think you've made the right decision there.

Sale is somewhere I'd move to with a family.
