I've noticed on the M66 near Ramsbottom and on the M60 near Oldham that over each lane both North and South there is a tall fixed camera to each lane with some sort of box at the base presumably recording data.

I guessed these are ANPR checking road tax, etc.

Am i right or what else are they or could be checking. Surely not speed and sending out penalties?

There are temporary ANPR cameras on poles on roads around Manchester Airport....

I don't mean the fixed ones that have been there for ages on the entries and exits.

Some near to the trafford centre as well.

Presume ANPR as there are seperate cameras for every lane both ways.

They temporary ones on long poles are to do with surveying traffic, not law enforcement.

So they can work out what routes people use to get to places. For example they might want to know how many cars coming down the M66 go off to Yorkshire on the M62. Unless you read the plate in two places your just counting cars.

Don't tell me they're capable of linking data from several cameras...I don't believe it hehe

PS...you're (you are) counting cars...HTH smile
