Hi All

Just picked this up on another NW thread

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/manches...

Key points

"Work to install seven cameras, which will record the average speed of vehicles on the 50mph road, is due to begin this week"

"The cameras are expected to be in use by the end of March."

The phrases "window of opportunity" and "last hurrah" spring to mind...

It's supposed to be the most dangerous road in the country ?

It's a bit scary pulling out of the Cat and Fiddle when someone has parked outside of it.

Its a decent road but there are better ones not much further away.

I imagine so, but if they don't personally I wouldn't want to hoon on the Cat & Fiddle at night. Yes I'm a wimp smile The A54 which leaves the Cad & Fiddle as it flattens out across the moor leaving Buxton way is a good alternative. It's been 50mphered (god knows why, but I could say that about a lot of Derbyshire's road) but the first part is very open and then it gets very interesting very quickly.

I'm a local too, and tbh you'd be doing fairly well to average 50 across most of that road anyway (the fun parts at least).. I'm not really that bothered. And as the others have said, the A54 stretch is far more entertaining if you like a challenge biggrin

it's becoming a joke, the bakewell to matlock stretch, leek into macc, and many other great hooning stretches now gone forever weeping

Which is the A54 then? Is that the road up past the Ice Cream Farm from Congleton towards Buxton? (if so I like that one biggrin).
I'm relatively new to the area so would appreciate some pointers on good, tight/twisty or hilly roads. Many of the roads around Holmes Chapel are too straight and open for my humble Mini, and too fast for my bike (or too fast for me!)

I was brought up driving around the Yorkshire Dales, so the bends up towards the Cat make me feel right at home cloud9

Thats the A54 stretch yeah, the Mini should be right at home up there smile

I'm often up and down the Holmes Chapel road, got mates in Middlewich/Winsford, and live in Macc. There's a great lane that heads across to Macc from near Jodrell, missing out the boring A road from Chelford roundabout... again, the Mini would love it, I know my Integra does biggrin

Long Hill used to be a great driving road frown

Isn't the Leek to Macc NSL still? I know it was reduced to 50, but for some reason it was brought back to NSL with the lower limits in the villages still in place.

The Buxton to Leek road is still NSL once you pass the Derbyshire border.

Its full of Gatso's now recon there must be at least 8/10 between the MacDonald's r-a-b (A50) and the outskirts of Macc.

They sure as hell won't work if your numberplates are either in your boot or someone else ;-)

Yeah the A54 is the one that starts off from Congleton mega hilly and twisty then gradualy opens up before you get to the buxton end, this is me in my old Primera eGT following identity crisis in his MR2 Turbo a few years ago, going towards Congleton. We'd just spent about 1/2 an hour picking our way through about a thousand cyclists on the cat before peeling off onto the deserted '54 cloud9

Looks like they're going to do the stretch of the A54 that joins the Cat too - far greater loss imo.

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults...

I suppose the other problem is that idiot bikers will just find another stretch to go smear themselves over and ruin that for everyone in a few years time too...

Big shame about the A54 then. I'll have to get the min dusted off and hope that the roads clean up before the cameras arrive..

Sounds like the A54 cameras will be on that long stretch that folks off the Cat & Fiddle. Good straight to get some speed up, but it does get quite bouncy over a ton eek

Looks like some other country lanes then. I'll see what the weathers like in the morning.

Are they SPECs cameras? if they are they will have to be rear facing or front and rear as rear wont record the driver of a car and forward won't record bike plates.
