Just thought I would mention this as it really bothered me when it happened last night.

I live near Poulton-Le-Fylde (nr Blackpool) and was driving home last night and was followed for quite a while by a newish BMW. This was coming along Hardhorn road past Baines School (if anyone knows the area and upto the traffic lights at garstang road going into Poulton)

It followed me for a while and then as I accelerated out of a junction (upto the speed limit of 30mph) it put on the full blue strobes / alternating flashing headlights etc etc. Obviously I assumed I was being pulled over - youngish lad Civic Type R with an exhaust - so I am relatively used to it.

However as I slowed down and pulled in the car didn't stop it slowed down next to me and then accelerated hard past. I didn't see the driver but it was 08 reg BMW 135i Coupe, I was then naturally a bit confused but assumed that perhaps he needed to get past for some reason even though he didn't drive past straight away.

Though the really weird part is after he has gone past me he then slowed down again for traffic lights which turned to red, so I crawled up behind hime. When they went to green he sat there for a while revved the engine and then shot off straight across into the main part of Poulton.

What gets me is if it was someone messing about, firstly they were very very good strobes/lights as they were exactly as per police cars I have been stopped by before. The car is not exactly a cheap car so wouldn't imagine it was a young lad, and it was as if they were trying to goad me into racing the way they stopped and revved the engine etc...

The car then pulled into a car park in Poulton which is usually a back way into the police station which is why I am bothered that if it was an unmarked car I think the behaviour was shocking and would like to complain.

I am tempted to go into the local police station and ask if they have an unmarked dark grey 135i - do you think they would tell you this information.

It was a bit of weird experience but I have heard of people faking unmarked cars pulling them over and then nicking the car!

Anyone else experienced this?

If you are concerned then phone your Police Station on the non emergency number.

Don't go down unless you have an appointment, you'll be stuck in front reception with societys dregs signing in etc and get no where.

You should get asked in to speak to somebody, who should no doubt be professional and helpful. They'll either persuade you to let them deal with it at the station level, or tell you how hard it is to go the IPCC route, as this would then be recorded against them.

Personally, I'd let them deal with it informally initially, someone will speak to the driver no doubt and it's less likely to make you a target, plus unless there are other complaints there may not eb enoguh evidence for the IPCC to do anything.

Did you get the reg?

The BiB don't usually use two doors and a 135 is a bit rich for any department but traffic.

It does whiff a bit.

If it's bothering you then phone it in - if they have a grey 135 then they'll do.....whatever. If they don't then maybe the 135 will get a proper tug for impersonating.

And if anyone does get pulled by an unmarked....lock your doors and take precautions against hijack until you're sure it's a proper copper.

I've seen an unmarked Grey 3 series with blue strobes on A585 towards Fleetwood. Looked pretty official to me.

I think they are liable to behave strangely as they may get a call out and then have that cancelled occasionally.

It will actually be a 330d saloon you've seen not a 135i.

That's what traf pol in lancs are now using.

You're saying he mistook a 330d saloon for a 135i Coupe?

Like some of the guys above have said, call it in at the local cop shop and see if its theirs.

I was heading down the M53 in a (police officer) mates car from seeing another mate in hospital over the summer and we passed a plain white vectra with some dodgy looking character at the wheel. About another mile down the road we were blatting along in a queue at around 90ish in the fast lane when said vectra comes blasting up behind us all with only some dodgy looking strobes in the front grille and a siren that didnt sound very genuine. He fashed us all one at a time till we moved over and slowed down then he tore off down the fast lane. Mate driving checked it out back at the station when he was next at work and checked out as a genuine unmarked car :s

Thanks for letting me know.

However I do know my cars pretty well and it was actually a 135i, the lack of rear doors, the shape and the badge on the back gave it away.

They do use 3 series saloons though as I have seen one pulling someone ever a couple of weeks back.

It's not necessarily a Police car - it could be Fire and Rescue or Ambulance Service. Both F&R and Ambo senior officers often have blues/sirens on their own/personal vehicles.

It was only a guess in case it flew past and you just got it mixed up.

It could be anything from a fire officer going to an emergency or possibly a paramedic/first responder. It could also have been some twit thinking it's good fun to have blue lights hidden on their car.

That sounds exactly like what happened to me, probably just some cock messing about then.

The lights/strobes were bang on like you say, but the way he was driving made me think it wasnt a copper!

I've just had a word with my brother who spends his life on the road (Taxi driver) driving around Blackpool. He says that there is a unmarked dark grey BMW around but he seemed to think it was a 3 series. I'll have a further word with him later.

This sounds really iffy, it can't hurt to report it to the local police station and see what they say...

It's likely to just be some idiot messing about, but on the other hand it could be quite sinister - impersonating a police car and asking lone females to pull over etc. There could well be pretty dark intentions at play there.

Please report it smile

True,

And a lot of ambulance services got spare manager cars as well, which can be used for extra cover, or if a normal response car breaks then.

I've worked on several unmarked cars, including a new model Golf, a Mazda 6, a cintroen Picasso, a chrysler and some honda jeep type thingy. All unmarked with hidden blue lights.

What happens is im driving in traffic, then control gives me a job, so i turn on blue's and start overtaking cars, but then they cancel me minutes later as a nearer response to the incident location has become available (eg just finished a job in that area) so then that unit gets send as it's nearer, and i turn off blue lights and get back in traffic, which i agree, will look a bit funny/confusing at times.
