Hope I've got the right region for this one.

Anybody heard of Wards Best Bitter?

Is it common in pubs or a niche brand? Just curious. smile

Not common.

I'm quite fond of real ale and I've had some of Wards best in a pub. It was some time back and it didn't make a big impression but it can't have been bad either (since it isn't in my EUCK! list).

I haven't tried the bottled variety.

Wards was/is one of the local brewerys around sheffield. There were plenty of pubs serving it there in the mid '90s, not sure about now though.

Yup, was a Sheffield brew, at the Sheaf Brewery on Ecclesall Road. It was owned by Vaux, who closed it down in 1999, the year after I left uni.

The beer was good, but it did depend on the landlord's ability to keep a good pint - I had some lovely pints, and some absolute horrors. The best place I found, was the Devonshire, just the other side of the road from the brewery... never had a bad pint in there! wink
