I'm looking to ramp up my training for the Army so would like to start running up and down some medium sized hills, off road.

Are there any of these about or do I need to venture to Wales? I'm in Northwich.

Come over to Macc/Buxton? Macc forest and Wildboar Clough are decent walking areas. 30mins from you and you can get a brew at the Cat n Fiddle if you get that far biggrin

think wales may be the best place for this kind of walk, Mol Famue or Snowdon this time of year are pretty enjoyable walks

The Horseshoe in Kingsley is near a reasonable hill. I would be running up and down that with refreshments available.

Should be perfect. Also what about Beeston? IIRC it's pretty steep and there must be some footpaths leading straight up the hill.

The peak district isn't too far - there are some nice circular walks over Shining Torr.

I've done a few laps of Delamere Forest running, nothing serious terrain-wise but there are a couple of ok hills that you can sprint up and down that are big enough to be an effort. I run the longest bike trail, forget what it's called, but it's good if you don't know the forest because you can follow the markers. I wouldn't usually suggest Delamere but as you're so close may be worth a look. As has been said, Macc Forest area is good. There are some good hills there, real leg burners. N.Wales is leagues ahead though. You can be in Llangollen in a hour and there are some real killer routes around the Horseshoe Pass for example. Park at Ponderosa Cafe, either run up past the aerial tower and do a lap of Coed Llandegla, or cross the road from the cafe and up the hill keeping the quarry on your right, then go along the ridge and back, that's a good one. My favourite is the Alwen Trail, not too severe (depending on your point of view!) and only 7 miles, it's ideal if you mostly run flat and fancy putting in some hills. That's an effort to get to though (middle of evo triangle) Moel Famau also good. I could go on..silly
