My local rag ran a story this week that 10-12 speed cameras will be installed on the Cat and Fiddle road to 'reduce the high number of motorcycle casualties'. £135,000 has been approved by Cheshire East council for the scheme to be installed by the end of the year. banghead My road still has gaping potholes with moss in them which they apparently cant afford to fix.

Its already 50mph and now this. One of the finest driving / riding roads in the UK and ruined by a few small minded local councillors.
I thought this was supposed to be a free country.ranting

Previously it was no problem to safely get past the Sunday drivers doing 30mph on the numerous straights but this plan is to put the cameras on these to 'ensure compliance with speed limits on entry into challenging bends'

AAAARRGGHHHHHH. Is it just me?????

Are they going to be normal cameras or an average speed system? They had considered measuring average speeds, which would really ruin the road. I guess the A54 will become more popular!!

I was up there on my push bike the other night (again) and was thinking about the fact that I always see loads of motorbikes but hardly ever any decent cars. I get the impression that very few people go out for hoons in the area...

I took my Sprinter over the Cat the other week. Was great - totally empty, really good opportunity to get to better know how the van handles on that kind of road.

Got to say though, speed cameras on it would make not one jot of difference to me. paperbag

I had previously heard that SPECS type system was planned but this article definately states 10-12 fixed cameras on the straight sections. Either is bad news. irked

Buy a new map. C&F isn't even in the top 100.

OK then, no problem to cover it in cameras as its cr*p apparently. rolleyes

If you live a stonesthrow from it and have been enjoying it for years as I have it is a concern.

Question is up there how do you power them? Its open moorland for the most and often shrouded in low cloud.

I really don’t think static cameras are the answer to making the cat less dangerous for bikers, perhaps adding some chicanes to the straights to lower overall entry speed would be the best answer?

I was up there last night admiring the view wink, there was a guy on a GSX-R who was the biggest mentalist I've ever seen on any road. I wouldn't be suprised if he's in hospital now.

It's now wonder there are regularly holes in the walls...

I've recently discovered the joys of the CnF in a proper car (not a Vectra which is all my previous experience of the road has been in!) and it's only about 25-30 minutes from my door - but its the hidden dips and undulations that keep me on edge. It worries me a bit when I can feel the car run light when I'm "around" the permitted limits, so I've no idea what it must be like on a crotch rocket at 3 figure speeds.

Still, it's the twisty bits that are more fun - anyone can drive fast in a straight line, but string a load of curves together in a nice sequence is much more satisfying.

I had read that they were putting the average speed cameras up all over C&F and Buxton, and they are all linked up so you would have to stick to the limit wherever you went round there. frown

Living in Macc, this is not good news.

If people start keeping more of an eye on the speedo on those roads rather than the roads there will be more accidents. Will they be removing cameras if the policy doesn't meet the stated aim?

I was up there last night too, saw two lads turning parked up on bikes but they must have given me a good head start before starting their run as I didn't see them again.

Seems there's a few of us local, hadn't realised smile

I drive that road every day, it is a lovely bit of road, they don't need cameras they need to invest more in policing the road. Return it to NSL and have trafpol on bikes discouraging the worst offenders (there are some real muppets in cars and on bikes). Another good move would be to enforce the 30mph speed limits on entering Buxton (and Macc for that matter), the number of bikes and cars I see doing stupid speeds down the Leek road, 60-70 mph past peoples front doors!

Agreed better policing by mobile patrols across Derbyshire would be good but it wont happen.
