Hi,

Need to take my Grandmother out for lunch next weekend. She lives near Penrith. Can anyone recommend anywhere decent? Not too fancy, more like good homemade pub grub.

Thanks in advance, Paul.

The Pooley Bridge Inn, in Pooley Bridge, a few minutes drive away at the end of Ullswater. Good last time I ate there.

Try the Watermill at Ings, just after Staveley on the A591
or
The Eagle and Child in Staveley (Over the level crossing if you take the first turning to Stavely off the A591)

Both excellent and decent beer as well thumbup

Two good pubs in Armathwaite. Fox & Pheasant or The Dukes Head. About 15 minutes drive from Penrith.

Oh, and if you want to go a bit further, The Blacksmiths Arms in Talkin is good as well, that's about 30 minutes away (depending on which side of Penrith you're coming from).

The white hart or heart hotel in Appleby was good in 1991
The Appleby Manor Hotel does a good FORMAL eveing meal, and nice sandwiches in the lounge. (last tested in 2007)

The Sportsmans' Arms is good.

Head from Penrith towards the West coast - A66 i think it is. It's a few miles on your right hand side, high up from the road.

I think it has an old vintage style van outside with an advert on it.

Good grub and nice atmosphere.

Rheged does some nice food too - posh - for a cafe!
