BBC says: "An historic Lancashire pier has burned down in a fire during the night.

Fire crews were called to the derelict Fleetwood Pier, built in 1910, at about 0430 BST after reports of smoke rising from the roof of the main building.

About 60 firefighters tackled the blaze, which they said was already well alight by the time they arrived. Police said the pier was "completely gutted"."

The story has received coverage on local news broadcasts. It seems some locals are pretty upset by the fire. As far as I recall, in recent times it's been evident that it has seen its 'glory days', and has been in considerable decline. Your thoughts, fellow North-Western Phers...

I did a search and nothing came up! Damn! Shall I keep the topic open (as it relevant to the NW), rather than closing it?

A local chap in his car started talking to me while I was getting some pictures of the wreckage - he told me the local rumour, and explained his theory behind it all! Unlike many rumours, this one has some decent reasoning behind it. 'Only time will tell'...

According to the comedian chap who had £500K invested in it, there was no insurance. He was interviewed on the local news last night, but didn't look that upset TBH - I'd be going nuts if I'd lost £500K eek

the news footage of the rebuilt peir will be worth £500k in advertising.

My gran used to live in Rossall Beach and used to take us the Fleetwood pier if we'd been really bad.
