Hi,

Feels strange to be posting on the NW board, but it's worthwhile because I want something hehe. I'm going to University at the end of this month which happens to be in Lancaster.
The University has a tight restriction on the car parking permits that it hands out. I'm just posting to see if anyone here living around the area knows anywhere that would be good for parking during the 40 weeks term time? Mainly if there are any lesser known alternatives, I think a council permit was somewhere in the region of £700. That's twice my food budget for a year wink

Apart from the obvious enjoyment of driving, I do fancy keeping the car as an alternative to National Rail.. so thanks in advance to anyone who has any ideas!

Dave.

Dave,

You have no chance. If you haven't got a permit, leave the car at home!

Where will you be living; campus or a house in the city?

If you're in the city, there's plenty of parking in the streets of Bowerham Road.

I sometimes leave my car there if I'm shopping and don't fancy joining the traffic to get to the Parksafe.

+1

Parking at the uni is a nightmare (well, as a member of the public it is, anyway). Plus, the uni isn't exactly in a place where you could park on a street nearby without having to walk quite a distance. I empathise with you about not wanting to use public transport, but I'm pretty sure there are very regular buses to the uni. And then once you're in Lancaster, the train station is only a very short walk. Driving's still better though!

Simon, nice car. Whenever I'm in Heysham (which is not very often at all) I shall keep an eye out. Wonder how many PHers there are in the Lancaster area...

Oi !!! So that's why I can never park in my street !?!?! wink

Seriously though, everyone is right.... Parking at the Uni and in Lancaster in general is a bit of a nightmare, though there appears to be a multi-story car park going up near PC world (north of the City) ?!?!

Last Sept the Uni started a new parking policy for the campus which basically means no student cars are allowed on campus. They will fine and clamp you... and as one of my colleague's found out, if you 'try it on' with the campus security you could end up in front of the Dean !! There is pay and display at £3 a day but the spaces are limited.

As has already been mentioned the Uni is a mile or two South of City which means you'd have to walk that distance if you park on a residential street. I live just off Bowerham Rd. and (since the new evil Uni parking policy) it takes me 20 mins to cycle in or a 45 min walk.

The Buses in Term time are good. They're usually every 5-10 mins, although they do get really busy in the mornings.

I'd say that if you are a 1st yr student and you are going to be living on campus it's probably easier to leave the car at home. If in the subsequent years you are off campus and rent a house in town with other students, then there's no reason you can't have you're car on the street outside your digs. Just be aware that parking is a nightmare and you can't always park in your own road, let alone outside your house. smile

My ex gf was from Sheffield and a student at Lancaster. The only reason she was even able to get a permit in Year 2 and 3 is because her Grandmother was quite ill, so she had a Doctors note saying she might have to leave at any time during the night to get back or something...

Yup, comment aimed at you! With regards to what I drive (not my car, it's Mum's) it's a...erm...black 1.2 Clio (new one). For all reading, do not laugh, I'd like to point out that I am young, insurance is expensive for us young people, and the Clio is in Group 2. Besides, I enjoy driving and it's a good car to drive (although I'm not keen on the electronically assisted steering). So, on second thoughts, I'm not that embarrassed.

However, Simon, there is the matter of me going to uni in less than a week, so you may end up saying hi to either a stranger or my dad should you see a black Clio. Although, I doubt you'd mistake my dad for me (he doesn't look like an 18-year-old).

As a minor thread hijack, I'd also like to make an appeal. I was on the way to pick up our Chinese takeaway, and when I got there the fuel filler cover had gone. Mechanism etc. was still there, just the bit of plastic to make it blend in with the rest of the car had disappeared. So, if anyone sees a plastic Clio fuel cover on the A6 between Lancaster (Scotforth) and Glagate, please let me know. Note: There is no reward (other than my thanks).

It was a nightmare 10 years ago when I was there, but if they've stopped letting students buy permits completely you're screwed frown

On the plus side, getting into/out of town is no problem, bike or bus.

When you are living in town (which you will be in your 2nd/3rd years), keeping a car is much more practical. And useful - 40 minutes to the lakes, about the same to the dales...ahh happy days cloud9

Oh PS, there used to be a uni car club, dunno if it still exists?

Congratulations on getting into Lancaster!

Parking here is a complete nightmare: a few years ago when I was a student I had my car with me but I ended up not buying a permit, they were quite lax in those days and I only got a couple of warning stickers over the whole year.

Just a few months ago they employed someone full time to patrol the parking so it has got a lot, lot stricter. Basically you can't get away with it anymore. I get a staff permit now, but if you want a student permit...you're pretty much out of luck.

Any other options? Well there are various on street places you could leave you car but I wouldn't risk it if I were you - the police were towing away cars at the end of last year that were parked on Hazelrigg Lane/Green Lane because residents were complaining. The only option I can think of is in Galgate, there is (I think) someone who rents out garages. They're still about 15 minutes walk from campus but it is about as good as you will get.

The bus service is good (probably - there seem to be lots of them) but you can't go hooning through the Trough of Bowland on the X1 really.

Edit to add: I assume this is Lancaster Uni we're talking about - we only have a 30 week term here. If it is UCum I don't know much about the parking there.

One of my mates has just gone to Lancaster Uni, he has long hair - you would see him from a mile off.

If Lancaster is anything like the Uni that I have just gone to, you won't be allowed to park your car overnight on campus, and there is nowhere in the city to park either. Its a rubbish arrangement, but we have to put up with it until at least next summer.

Good luck with uni anyway.

If your mate is doing Computer Science then he's probably living opposite me hehe

No luck with parking, not to worry. To be honest it'll save me money in the long run anyway, so buses it is from now on!
