The Lakes ! really, all the lakes are stunning, 'The Struggle' is a good road, Hardknot pass is a challenge. Just take a map and aim for somewhere then repeat, it is pretty compact really, the road along Ullswater is another good one.

And don't try the struggle in winter - had a hilarious afternoon walking and watching the cars try to climb the ice sheets as they reached Kirkstone Inn.

I did those roads on Pass Plus - brilliant fun (and on a serious note, they were a good experience for judgement of dimensions of cars, gears, road positioning etc...). Go there.

Mark, I am now tempted to go there one winter's day with the camera and find a nice icy spot under some trees to have a little rest(/wait until cars come up the hill).

Simon, have fun!

I took the Lexus over Hardknot in the snow laugh unless you have driven it you have no idea how nerve wracking that was! right at the top the car was as wide as the road and the poor traction control got in a right tizz! Not it must be said, as funny as the old chap coming the other was in a 3 series BMW stuck on an uphill hairpin near the top boiling his tyre in a vain attempt at forward motion, it did get up but I doubt there was much tread left, we had a right time seeing where we were going for the smoke!

If you want a real challenge try Honister pass. Done it once with a little ice and it is interesting.

This is still the best view in the Lakes though.

Great driving roads in the and around the lakes even in a GT

23 XK8/R driving over most of the passes this March has to be one of the best driving weekends I have ever experienced.

Honnister Pass
Whinlatter Pass
Kirkstone Pass
Rhino's Pass
Hardknott Pass

all of them are great challenging roads.

If you like the scenery and the various challenge each road gives... then do them all !

Or for a more faster stretch of road then take the A686 from Penrith to Alston. Its a little out of the way from the Lake District but not too far. This road has been voted best driver's road in the UK on many past occasion.

+1 that is a great stretch of road used to use it as the alternative/scenic/great drive road when going to Newcastle airport.

Lucky bugger that I am, the A686 starts just 20miles from my front door, so I ride it a lot! biggrin The section from Penrith to Alston is mucho fabuloso, but the bit from Alston up to Haydon Bridge is equally as good... It has some fast flowing bits, as well as tight, nadgery hairpin sections through the valleys, and everything in between! thumbup
